What 9" Ford rear for my 88 GTA?

I'm am thinking about buying a used 9" ford rear end. I need 4:11 gears in it. I know that currie enterprises sells them that bolt in but it costs like 2300 bux. What years or cars should I look at to make an easy bolt in? I found one from a 70s nova, will it fit? I found some advertised for like 800 but they have 3.50:1 gears in it. Is it even worth it to by a used one? Are there any other companies that sell bolt ins at a more reasonable price? Thanks all!

There are no bolt-in ones. Has something to do with the manufacturer.

No modified ones for any other chassis will fit these cars, unless the stock type of rear suspension is replaced with something completely else; and even then it's unlikely that whatever you find will fit whatever you end up with under your car. That includes ones set up for leaf spring cars like Novas.

There's basically no sense in bothering with trying to look for any of the parts out of a junk car; the housing, axles, brakes, and center section are all going to be custom. All that leaves is a R&P, a carrier, and a pinion bearing retainer, all of which are the functional guts, and which suck in stock vehicles. Those are all the things that a racer has to change in, say, a Mustang one, to set a stock one up for racing in its native chassis.

$2300 is pretty typical. Moser and Strange also supply them with the special adaptation required for the torque arm.

You might also want to consider a GM 12-bolt. It's about as strong, but weighs less and wastes a little less power; but it isn't as quick or easy to change gears, if that's an issue in your situation. Cost is similar: $1500 or so on up, $2000 for a well optioned one.

It's best to get the axles with the housing so that they're the proper length. There's usually 2 common axle spline choices. 28 and 31. Ford used both and both are stronger than a GM 7.5" diff. Choose the 31 spline then keep your eye out for a 31 spline carrier.

You can go to 35 or 40 spline axles but the carriers are expensive. I wouldn't even consider 35 spline axles until you put over 800hp to the rear wheels.

I plan on using a 300HP nitrous boost. Will the rear hold up to this if I get the 31 spline 9"?

hmmm...

I'm planning on going with the mosier package...
Should cost around $1500 all said and done.
I got a peg leg center section out of a junk yard. I'm going to put a 3.70 gear with a 31 spline spool in it.

This is the cheapest route I've found yet.

If you find anything better in the next couple of days hollar back at me. Otherwise I'm getting ready to order.

The Moser and Currie base package is a bolt in diff with torque arm mount. It includes the housing, axles and bearings. You supply the center section with gears.

You'll also need to decide on what to do for rear brakes. I went with Ford 9 x 2 1/8" drum brakes, bolt pattern etc. Since my rims have both ford and chev bolt pattern it wasn't hard to do. The brakes have no problem slowing me down at the end of the 1/4 mile and they're huge compared to the GM drum brakes.

The strength of different spline axles can be found on
