tranny or rearend or both?

ok my transmission has lost overdrive. but now when i step on the gas to try and make the car squeel because i don't care about the tranny i feel a weird feeling i can't tell if its the tranny or the rearend its almost like the car should be driven but its not like something is moving but the rearend ain't turning. Or could that just be the tranny on its final legs finally dying?
