Question about Manual Tranny!
Question about Manual Tranny!
I am currently working on an 83 Z28 that orginally had a standard transmission in, was ported to an automatic, and now I want to put a manual back in it. All mounting hardware for the clutch pedal is still in place and I know that I will need a Pilot Bearing (besides the obvious: clutch & pressure plate) My question is this. I know that the Automatics that came with the Third Gens where 700R4's and I THOUGHT the manual's where 700T5's but the closest I can find to 700T5 is a T5 transmission which appears to be the transmission that was used in the Mustangs. The engine in the car now is a 350 and I dont intend to change the engine to anything bigger or smaller. Is the T5 the correct transmission? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
If whoever took out the manual and put in the auto did it right, they probably did take out the pilot bearing, I don't ever recall an auto having one.
There's no such thing as a 700T5, the only manual option for 83-92 cars was the T-5 (Borg-Warner) transmission. It basically IS the same transmission as the Rustang, but the differences are enough that they are NOT interchangable, or at least not without a LOT of work (read: expensive!)
You're in luck that everything else is there. Keep in mind that the T-5 was barely capable of handling the torque of a stock 305, much less a mildly hopped up 350 if you play too rough. If you are pretty gentle with it (no power-shifting, etc.!) it will probably last for awhile.
Best suggestion if you have the money, either go with a Tremec (5-spd, higher torque capacity) or a T-56 (6-spd) from a 4th gen, pre-98. The Tremec will probably bolt right in, and just some minor work to make the T-56 go in.
Hope this helps

No Auto's dont need a Pilot bearing, your right. As far as gentle is concerend, I dont drive the car to fry the tires the length of the quarter mile, but we all have our moments.
Do you have a ball park figure on what a Tremec or a T-56 would cost? Money IS an object, but I can usually make ends meet.
Thanks for your help

About $1800-2200 for a t56 swap (That includes a new starter, and aftermarket flywheel and a new performance clutch and PP)
Shop around. Salvage yards and EBay are good spots. Make sure to grab the whole deal (Pedals, lines, ect.) as piecing it together will get pricey...

82 & 83 were mechanical linkage & 84-up were hydraulic linkage. I would go w/ the 84-up hydraulic stuff myself.
