Auto to Manual
Hi, I have an 82 z28 CFI.
My first mod (besides a tune up) is going to be switching transmissions.
Well Ive seen quite a few things on here about them, so I am not going to ask what all needs to be done, I am just wondering about pricing.
What has everyone paid to make the swap?
New/Used transmissions, what did you get for your auto in your car.
Any information that you could pass on would be great, were there any real hard things about the swap, no, yeah, maybe??
Thanks.

You've got an extra wrinkle to address in swapping to a T5 or TH700...your current T200C trans is shorter than any of these. The crossmember is further forward than the later cars that came with T5 or TH700R4 transmissions. Not too hard to fix, the two rear crossmember bolt holes will be your new front holes and you'll need to add a new rear hole on each side. I drilled the holes using the crossmember as a template, and slid a bolt with a big thick washer from inside the frame rail on each side so the threads stuck down. Still running these with my T56 which I later upgraded to.
For my '82 I picked up a TH700R4 complete with crossmember, torque converter, torque arm and mounts, and driveshaft from an '88 RS for about $600 total. Don't go much newer or you'll get a trans with magnetic VSS instead of gear-drive, extra pain to convert.
I had to get a longer speedo cable to reach the TH700's longer tailshaft location, but the TH200's TCC connector plugged right in and worked the TH700's TCC just fine. The 700 bolted right up to my 305 CFI, the torque arm and driveshaft bolted into place, and I was on the road. I later swapped to a B&M shifter because the TH200C shifter wouldn't let me get into 1st gear manually...trivial unless you really want that. The TH700 shifter I tried to install wasn't a bolt-in, the brackets weren't compatible.
Throw in about $100 for misc stuff...trans fluid, new filter, pan with drain plug, new rubber mount. Be prepared to deal with the speedo gears if the donor car didn't have the same rear gear ratio as yours, or your speedo will read incorrectly.
