Engine revs real high until tranny "catches," slipping? Help!

On my way home from the local dragstrip I noticed that my car seemed to be acting a little unusual... when I went to pass someone on the highway, I kicked it down and the RPMs just surged real high, then it "caught" and engaged the gear. This was in fourth gear (overdrive) on my 700R4. I'm assuming that this means the transmission is slipping? I also noticed that when I'm driving along at about 70mph, the RPMs just go up and down from 2000 to 2500 when I'm in fourth gear and possibly third. It never did this before, and I'm wondering if I didn't damage something when I raced it tonight.

What do I need to fix this problem? I adjusted my TV cable but I can still pull it out of the linkage a good 3/8"... it doesn't seem tight at all. Could high tranny temperatures cause this to happen? I made four runs in my car in a relatively short amount of time.

One thing to note... a friend of mine who was watching said that my car made a puff of white smoke as I hit third gear, and it only did it once (my second run). I didn't feel anything in the car, and I never knew my car to chirp the tires in any gear.

Yes it's probably slipping and you probably damaged it at the track. A rebuild or new tans is probably the only solution.

Thats what mine does about 3 months before it's toast. I say we both find a way of updating to a better tranny, like a TH350 or TH400.

I actually have a TH-350 from my '67 Camaro that's being replaced with a TH-400. I suppose that I could put the 350 in but I really like my overdrive, especially for gas mileage. How much would a decent rebuild on the 700R4 cost me? I guess I could live without OD if it would save me 500 bucks.

It all depends on the cost of the parts (and quality) and the shop labor. Could be anywhere from $500-$1500. My Pro-Built cost about $1400 but it's the best you can get.

A friend of mine has a nephew who owns a shop near me. I think I'll see if he can arrange something with labor costs, because that's probably gonna be what drives up the price.
