took apart the T5
X100ok, what am i looking for here?
the synchro sleeves, blocking rings, synchro hubs, gears........they all look ok
i found one thing wrong though........the input shaft bearing seems to be shot as it allows way too much endplay when you place the input shaft into the retainer (it did this when the trans was assembled too)
the shift forks look ok
the input bearing retainer has a nice scrape on it though
and one tooth of a gear (cant remember which gear) had a very little bit taken off of it (doesnt look serious)
also i found 2 nice big chunks of metal on the bottom of the case
i cant tell what they came from though?????????
help please!!!!!!!!!!!
what do i need to do now????????

Put it back together!
seriously, you ned a 'kit", if you don't already have one. It will have the bearings, snap rings, seals, and a couple of other wear parts in it. Sounds like you also need a clutch gear bearing retainer, available separately.
What was wrong with it (behavior) that made you want to take it apart? Some things can be massively fornicated and you wouldn't notice it with the naked eye, like for example if it jumped out of gear or some other things like that. Also, is this a "World Class" with the tapered roller bearings on the countergear and the bolt-in retainer for the rear of it, or the 1st design, with straight rollers there?
You should definitely identify any big chunks of metal. What gear has pieces missing? Does the gear it meshes with show any sign whatsoever of wear or damage that correlates to it?

well, it started grinding when shifting into fourth
then, it started popping out of second when i DOWNSHIFTED from third
(wouldnt pop out on the 1-2 shift)
then i started getting stuck in 3rd
since i knew it was on its way out, i started to "muscle" it out of third
then one night it just locked up in gear
its not a big deal that i have to get it rebuilt for i am putting a TH350 into my Z28
i tried to get the torx bolt that holds the reverse/5th shifter fork off, but had no luck.......i tried: ratchets, breaker bars, IMPACT, chisels...........cant get the damn bolt loose
if you have a tip for me, it would be greatly appreciated
i would like to get the trans rebuilt though in the near future, becasue these things just dont last

If you are referring to the 5th- reverse pivot bolt, there is no need to remove it. The entire transmission can be disassembled with it still installed.

Support the 5th-R shift rail with a block of wood and knock the pin out, and slide the 5th fork off, then the rail just comes out. Also knock the roll pin out of the reverse idler shaft, slide it forward, and that gear will come out.
Like the other post said, you don't have to take out the 5th reverse lever.
When you get it all apart, wash everything real good with diesel fuel, and take all the case pieces (case, ext hsg, cover, external brackets) to the quarter car wash. Use a toothbrush and diesel fuel to get all the schmutz out of all the grooves in the synchro sleeves, etc. After you get it all as clean as you can with diesel, wash it one last time in lacquer thinner, and spray it all with WD-40 to keep it from rusting.
At this point you'll be ready for parts inspection....

I know I've said this before, but if you aren't familar with the T5 trans, then buy the video fron hanlon. It's $16.95 and worth it's weight in gold. I've been doing transmissions in my cars, pickups and semi's for over 25 years, and after watching the video from hanlon, I wouldn't even consider doing a T5 without it. There is so much good info there that only experience can teach you, and they go through the trans step by step and show you the trouble spots to look for. I lost a front cluster bearing in a NWC T5, and had to replace the cluster. Got the rebuild kit from hanlon, and the cluster from drivetrain.com. I wish I had a WC in my 87, but the NWC went 144k, so am just rebuilding it and hope to get another 50k out of it. Good luck-Dan

ok thanx guys
i actually borrowed the T5 shop manual from work
i have done several manual trans's b4, but i always had help (because they were done in school)
this is my first solo flight with a manual trans
its funny but this mechanic where i work with 24 years experience NEVER did a manual trans until 2 monthes ago
i think i can handle the rest of the rebuild............i tore the thing down in less the 2 hours.................i understand how it works, but i need to know to look for being bad

You said you need to look for the damaged parts. Well that's where the video shines. They point out the trouble spots and give you tips and tricks for re-assembly of the trans. I've probably done 200 tanny's in my life and probably could figure this one out with a book, but the book doesn't show you where the shift forks tend to crack, how to get the main shaft out, and doesn't tell you that you don't have to remove the reverse pivot bolt to disassemble the trans. Also doesn't tell you where to put the extra washer included in the hanlon kit that helps keep oil in the main shaft rollers. The video does. For $16.95 you can't go wrong. After I finish my trans, I'm going to put the video on Ebay and will probably get all my money back out of it. Actually, I just remembered another person on this board has expressed interest in buying the video from me, so scratch the ebay idea. If there was some way to put it online for everyone I would. But it's 2 hours long and would take up hundreds of megs, and you would need a very high speed connection to view it. Anyway, just my humble opinion.-Dan
