700R4 Questions
I just had a 700R4 built by a reputable transmission shop. I am pleased so far, but I do have couple of questions about the performance of my transmission. I have a 91 GTA and I had the stock 700r4 rebuilt. The components are similar to those of the Mega Raptor (http://www.transmissioncenter.net).
When I put it in OD it upshifts fine but when I enter a corner it doesn't down shift unless I get on it a little.
Sometimes when I accelrate through 1st gear coming out of a corner the transmission does not seem to grab until second gear. I added a little more transmission fluid, but still noticed the behavior
Sometimes If I only do a part throttle acceleration and let of in second gear it goes into third pretty hard.
Last but not least,,, at wide open throttle the shifts seem to come between 5000 and 5200 RPM and are very firm. I think this is good but I am wondering if the RPM is to high.
One more thing the torque converter they gave me was said to be a 2000 stall and uses a "5 inch" bearing that is used in heavy duty applictions. Is there such a thing?
I adjusted the TV cable and checked it by letting the car shift to second then flooring it to see if it down shifted back to first. I have read that when it does this you are close to having the TV cable adjusted right.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Dont take offense, but that is why you should go with a Six speed, man what a difference!!! Your problem partly or mostly is with the detent cable adjustment (Yes, it is a pain to set it correctly.) Adjust it to factory setting by pressing in the detent button while pulling the cable out torwards the TB. Then while you still have the button depressed, let go of the cable. Now try that (drive it). Then you can make adjustments from there as needed. (A Chilton's manual from O'reileys auto parts will help.) It shouldnt shift at 5200, mine never did. 4800-5000 is where you want to be. I would also look into a fan assisted aftermarket tranny cooler (VERY GOOD INVESTMENT) and also look into a solenoid lock-up switch to help out that converter (especially if you are racing the car). I hope this helps!

Thank you for the reply. I have adjusted the cable per Transfixleo's directions. I also have a B&M super cooler with an eight inch fan tied into an inline thermostat in the incoming cooler line. The tranny usually stays about 150F with ocassional rises to 190F during hard driving. I appreciate the suggestion of the lock up switch, but I tend to disagree with that strategy. It allows for possible operator error. As of now I make my lock up changes in the eprom, unless someone comes up with a better idea.

Any more ideas? I would really like to get some opinions on wether or not I should be concerned about the operation of my new trans. It is warrantied, but I do not really want to take it out for a while.
