th350
th350
I have an 86 305 TPI motor in my Jeep, it runs great. I would like to install a 70's 4x4 th350 trans. I currently have a sm465 4 speed. My ecm is setup for a non computer controlled trans. How do i hook my detent and my vacum module on the th350 to a TPI motor.

I am not a tranny pro, but i did recently do a swap involving the TH350. I just ran a vacuum line from manifold vacuum to the trans. For the detent, I used an aftermarket kickdown cable, the kind that requires you to trim to fit, and attached to the throttle body and, obviously, the TV on the trans. My swap was from a 305/5speed to a 383/TH350. Both motors are TPI and I am using the stock ECM. Hope this is somewhat helpful.
Thanks for the help. Question, when you said you hooked the kick down cable to the throttle linkage then to the t.v. on the trans. Did you mean to the detent on the trans. I thought th350 did not have tv cables.
Thanks for the help.

Like i said I am not the tranny pro. I thought the detent was the kickdown. If i am mistaken forgive me and tell me what the difference is. As for the throttle valve, I am pretty sure all autos have one. I believe it increases the pressure inside the trans to help with the shift at higher engine RPM. Again if i have said anything that is wrong sorry. All I know is that my TH350 and TPI combo works well and shifts strong. Good luck
Thanks for the help, I purhcased the aftermarket kickdown cable, this is my first experience with an automatice transmission. I don't what the difference is between a detent cable and a tv cable. It sounds like they do the same thing just different names. One last question, the throttle bracket that I am going to connect the kickdown cable to is on the drivers side of the engine and it will connect to the th350 on the passenger side. Was that the same in your configuration.
Thanks again for all your help, I'm just learning.

CJ7,
The same set up. I have a t-350 and it bolts up on the passenger side and goes up to the drivers side throttle/kickdown.

The TH350 relies on the vacuum modulator to control the shifts and line pressure (line rise). The detent cable or downshift cable controls downshifts only, it is not like the TV cable on 700R4's that controls upshifts & down shifts.

Thanks pro trans I was wondering about how this worked. Just so I only have to do this once. I connect the vaccum modulator to a vacuum source on the intake and the detent cable to the same bracket the throttle is connected to. The bracket has a small catch on it below where the throttle hooks up and you use one of those aftermarket detent cables with the hook end on it instead of the small pin style.
Where in the vacuum lines should I splice in and run to the th350?
Thanks

You should get vacuum at any point on the intake manifold
that has full vacuum at idle. I don't recommend splicing into
the vacuum line to the power brakes because power assist
would be diminished if the hose to your modulator were to become cracked or fall off
You don't need to hook up the detent cable for a TH350 to live, but it is more driver friendly
if it is hooked up and adjusted correctly

How do you properly adjust the kickdown cable on a TH 350? I have mine adjusted so at 3/4 to full throttle the cable moves. If this is incorrect i would like to know how to set it up. Thanks in advance.
Pull the cable toward the front of the car with your fingers or
pliers. You should feel the resistance of a spring in the valve body, then the cable will stop. You want the throttle to pull the cable like that, but just short of the stop to prevent cable or detent linkage breakage. If you are going about 40MPH in Drive (3rd gear) and push the gas pedal to the floor, a forced downshift should occur

THanks Nordbert.
I guess I have the thing adjusted about right then. I was only concerned because at rest the cable is a little loose. I just used common sense when i installed it. I figured trying to pull it further than it seemed to want to move would be bad.
