Bad tc?

My torque converter (or something nearby like the front pump or something) is making lots of noise at idle. Its like a hollow metallic clunking noise that happens while the engine is idleing. It seems to be occuring at the same speed as the engine rpms and it sounds like its coming from the tc. When i put the car in gear, the noise goes away and its quiet again. What is this? Oh btw, this happened while i was racing a mustang so it happend while the driveline was under load. i heard it when i got back to my house.

this happened to me too...

I took off the tc cover a couple of weeks ago but nothing looked loose. Now the noise is very bad. What did you do to fix your problem? I have the exact same symptoms you did.

His flexplate bolts came loose. Theres cover on the trans that can be removed to see the flexplate to converter bolts. Theres only 3 of them so you may have to crank the engine over a little to see them.

Another thing that can cause a similar noise and symptoms is a cracked weld on the tc bolt holes.

If i can remember the bolts looked fine but all where hand tight upon inspection. I had way overreved my motor racing an equally slow late model GT and the rest of the way home it made a *** awful racket when I stuck it in neutral. Take the cover off and inspect everything. Also, if its safe to do so, run the engine and try to pinpoint the noise.
