2-3 shift on 700R4
2-3 shift on 700R4
Is there anything that can be played with in the valve body that would make the 2-3 shift faster and firmer? I had the trans rebuilt and now I'm getting a flare between 2nd and 3rd. Its like 2nd disengages faster than 3rd can engage, so it just revs in the middle of the shift. How can I make 3rd apply faster without the tranny coming back out of the car?
No, its not third going out. It doesn't slip during the shift. When the trans shop did the tranny, they set 2nd up to come in alittle quicker so the 1-2 shift would be hard and fast. They didn't compensate for the fact that during the 2-3 shift, 2nd would also disengage faster. Now there is a delay between 2nd letting off and 3rd engaging. I've read about it at a couple different websites, but none of them say how to fix it. I was just wondering if it can be fixed with the tranny still in the car, or the shop is going to have to pull the trans and tear it down again. Its still under warranty, but everytime they've had the car they keep it for 3-4 days. I hate not having my ride!
Not an uncommon complaint. They did build the original trans, right? If not, start there. Low quality 3-4 Clutches can cause this as well as a leak in the 3rd accumulator check valve or reused sealing rings on the Input Shaft. Loose Band adjustment or a bad Band/Drum. Not to mention having a Supercharger on the engine.
Start with correct TV setting: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
A 'Vette Servo is meant to correct this problem from the factory. I would suggest that, a .500 TV Boost Valve and a TransGo Reprogramming Kit.

As far as I know, they rebuilt my tranny and didn't just give me another one. It was rebuilt using "high performance frictions and steels" and "high performance band" according to the warranty paper. I brought it back three times already for this problem. The first time they said they couldn't find anything wrong. The second time, last week, they pulled the tranny and went through it again. They claim to find nothing wrong but replpaced the band and 3/4 clutches anyways. It still did when I got the car back. I took it back again yesterday, but this time I drove for the test drive. I hammered on it for him and showed him how at wide open throttle it revs from 5200 RPM when it starts to shift all the way up to 6300 RPM before drive engages. He told me he had to contact the makers of the shift kit he used to find out how to fix it. When I called him back today, he said he had to order a couple of parts, and for me to bring the car in next Wed. From the sounds of it, I'll be without my car a few more days again.

I'm really not sure what parts they used. The receipt just generically refers to everything as "high performance" this, that, and the other. Also, as far as the servo goes, I thought the Formula already had the "Vette" servo. I went to the local Chevy dealer and had them look up the part number for the vette servo and the servo for my car, and it was the same part number. Or is there more than one servo and he looked up the wrong one?
Once in a blue moon I see the Corvette servo in an "F" body, you would need to check this out for yourself. The Vette servo is the only GM hi-performance one there is. Have them tell you in writing what they used?
