Rear end problem

when I turn and accelerate... the rear end seems to lock up and make an EEHHNNNNEEHHH noise.... i am quite certain this is bad, but what is the problem, and what should i do to fix it

first thing to do is not to drive it any more. second thing would be to pull the cover and do a little inspection work. i'd guess the spider gears are shot.

I do not think my rearend has spider gears.... i think it has littel clutches or something like that.... it is a 2.77 posi BW

You have the borg warner 9 bolt and it has 4 spider gears. Sounds like the posi unit is wornout (It will have to be taken apart to determine specifically what, but probably the cones are worn out and took to carrier halves with it). Depending on how bad it is, it can be rebuildable but will probably be cheaper to buy a new one.

got some good news, but it kinda makes me look stupid.... I checked my tranny fluid and it was about a quart and a half low,,, i added the fluid and it fixed the problem with my rearend

thats weird that that would fix it I have the same problem with my 87 ,with my 9 bolt posi and my tranny fluid is fine. Ive narrowed it down to needing a new posi. It also seems to be bad when its warm out or when the rearend gets real warm after driving it for ahile.
