slips in reverse

the other day we tryed to but a JR shift kit in from transgo and it said to grind down the 2nd to last noch on the pressure regulator valve. what does that do? now when the car is in reverse it seems to slip and if you wait for a second after you put it into reverse then it seems to grab better. also it seems to not shift as hard from 1 to 2nd gear.

now today we put in a over hual kit and the trans runs better but it still seems to have the slipage. can replacing this valve fix my problems?

Unless you ground the wrong land it has nothing to do with reverse. Did you leave the stock aluminum reverse piston as is? Was the sealing ring surface for the drum good? These are the common areas for reverse problems on these.
