Axle Question
Hey all, I have a 1987 Trans Am with 3.27 posi. It also has rear disc brakes. I know that the axle on the drivers side is bent. I have been told that to remove an axle, I will need to remove the diff coverplate and undo the bolts, take out the 8mm pin(which will more than likely be broken or will break when removed) and then remove the c-clips. I have also been told that since my car ia a Pontiac, I will have a "floating" axle which is removed by taking out the 4 bolts on the hub. Which one is it? I can't take my rotor off as it is pretty much seized on the hub and would damage it trying. So I can't just take off the rotor to take a quick check.
I was also told that it is only the Camaros that have the c-clips. Is this true? I need to know which axle I have so as to get the right one.
Thanks.

you have c clips, not a 4 bolt flange at the backing plate. you'll need to remove the rear cover, remove the cross bolt then the pin and take the c clips out then the axle will pull out, after you've took care of the brakes since you have disk.

Count the cover bolts... if there's 10 it's the C-clip type, if there's 9 it's the other.
If it's really the 3.27 ratio, it's a 9-bolt. That exact ratio doesn't come in 10-bolts.

9-bolt or 10-bolt, they are both considered "semi-floating" axles, NOT full floating.
But like mentioned, if the cover has 10-bolts, you have C-clips inside the carrier and if you have 9-bolts, it has the bolts on the ends of the axles. Neither one was Camaro/Firebird specific.

The 3.27 ratio is a 9 bolt ratio.
To remove the axle, remove the wheel, brake caliper and rotor, then remove the 4 bolts on the axle retention flange. The axle will then slide out. You don't even have to remove the rear cover.
