axle questions

hey guys i just got a posi out of a 4th gen car and i obviously need the 28 spline axles. can anyone tell me the exact diameter and length of these so i know i am getting the right axles that will fit my 86 7 5/8 rear. my car also had drum brakes, does that make a difference?

4th gens have 10 bolts. There's no 9-bolts in them. 9-bolt ring gear dia is 7.75".

Anyway, the only axles that will work are ones out of a 90-92 F car. They'll be the same length as yours, and the same diameter at the bearing; they won't neck down like yours do though. The spline section will be larger diameter. And of course, they'll have 28 splines.

You're going to have a REALLY hard time coming up with junk axles. Most boneyards won't sell them, they'll only sell whole rears when they're high-demand ones like these cars. So what you'll end up having to do is buy a whole rear, take the axles (the part everybody wants anyway) and just leave the housing and all that behind. Any 3rd gen 90-92 will work, the axles are all the same; look for 6-cyl RSs and other bottom-line cars.

You can also order better 28 spline axles from places like www.tomsdifferentials.com Part number KAC7-A7

They're only $125 each and much better than 90-92 axles if you can even find them. The aftermarket axles will fit drum or disk brakes.
