axles too small?

i bought a limited slip diff. from a friend of mine and went to put it in my car a fw weeks ago, took out the old carrier swapped the ring gear, and put the lsd in. i pushed the axles in and spun the tires, to my horror, the axles just spun inside the carrier. what is the deal? ive since put my old one back in but i want my posi. I know that i have 26 spline axles , does this mean the carrier is for 28 spline axles? im sure its a 3 series carrier for a 7.5 10 bolt, because it fit perfect besides that. If all i need is 28 spline axles were can i get them from for cheap. i only paid 50 bucks for the diff. i dont want to spend a lot for axles.

thanks

It sure sounds like a 28 spline carrier. Good luck finding a set of factory 28 spline axles for a third gen. You'll find them in 90-92's and you shouldn't find too many of them in the junkyards since production numbers were low.

You could go a real cheap route and pull the posi apart and replace the side gears with the 26 spline ones.

Good aftermarket 28 spline axles for 82-92 third gen housings are available from www.tomsdifferentials.com for $125 each.

They "should" but don't quote me on it. When I used a 10 bolt I got the side gears out of a '93 S-10 that someone already took the axles and gears from. I put them into another carrier then had them all welded up

I don't see why the side gears should be any different in a posi or open diff but they might be. Take them out and look at them.
