pump seal question

How difficult is it to change the pump seal in a 700r4? I have a small leak comming from the lower two bolts and need to fix it! I was thinking of backing out the bolts and puting a small bead of ultra black rtv, then tighting the bolts again. But I would like to know how to change the seal and if there are any special precautions in doing this procedure?

Thanks for the help!

Piece of cake, the bolts actually have recesses in their heads to accept an o-ring. It's probably missing/torn.

Is it possible to put the o ring onto the bolt by slipping the o ring over the head of the bolt?

You are talking about three different things, I'm not sure what you are talking about.
There is a TC seal that seals the torque converter to the pump cover. You must pull the tranny and remove the TC to replace the seal. Also, if there wasn't one when you removed the seal, install a seal retainer (goes over the seal) to help prevent blowout.
There are pump bolt o-rings that keep fluid from leaking out through the bolt threads. I can't say that I have ever tried to replace the o-rings w/o completely removing the bolts.
There is also a pump gasket. It seals the pump body to the case of the transmission. You'd have to remove the tranny, pull the pan off and remove the TCC solenoid, FWD Acum. feed tube and then pull the pump to replace the gasket, but that wouln't cause an external leak.
One thing you didn't mention was the pump o-ring. It goes completely around the pump and seals the pump to the case and this will cause an external leak if bad. Once again, you'll have to pull the pump to replace it.
