Why does my 700R4 shift differently?
Why does my 700R4 shift differently?
I recently had my transmission serviced because it wasn't shifting quite right. The downshifts were a little late but the trasmission still felt pretty good. However, the mechanic got an engine code on his diagnostic computer so then proceeded to replace the TCC solenoid (what is this?). However, now when I drive my car I can barely tap the pedal, going forward a foot or two at part throttle, and the transmission will shift into second. Its almost like I dont even have a first gear. But, oddly enough at 3/4 WOT or more it seems to shift very good. The other thing it's doing is that the in between shifts are softer/ slower, not at all crisp like it used to be. Is the TV cable the problem? Is this because the mechanic had to adjust the TV cable to put in the TCC solenoid and then didn't take the time to adjust the cable properly? Thanks

It sounds like before the cable was too loose, and the tranny was acting as if you had more throttle than you really did (higher shift points, harder shifting). And it sounds like it's adjusted right now (lower shift points, softer shifting - like it's supposed to be at part throttle).
As long as the WOT shifts are still good and quick like they are supposed to be, I'd say your tranny is now working as it's supposed to.
Coudln't hurt to double check the TV cable anyways, do a search in the archives for transfixleo's method, works fine.
TCC solenoid is a little hydraulic relay thing inside of the tranny pan, it locks up your torque converter when the computer tells it to, which eliminates the torque converter slipping when you are going down the highway (less heat, better MPG).

Same thing happened in my old "92 Z28 5.7L, but only after I installed a B&M transpak. At normal throttle shifts were quick from 1st to 2nd, but with 3/4 to full it would stay in 1st longer.
I checked the shifting points on the tach; it consistantly shifts at 1750 rpm from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. It seems I'm not at all getting the most out of each gear. If this isn't the normal shifting points, where should the ideal shifting points occur? thanks

1750 sounds entirely normal to me for a light throttle shift.
during light throttle operation, it shifts earlier because it doesn't need to get the most out of every gear. It's just a light throttle shift. If the tranny held every gear till 3000 rpm, people would complain to GM in droves!!!
The 700R4 cable test is as follows:
accelerate as lightly as possible. The instant the tranny shifts to 2nd, NAIL IT. If it upshifts back to 1st, you're cool.

Also, your transmission should not shift from 3 to 4 when at WOT.
