700R4 rebuild??
Anyone done a rebuild on a 700R4 themselves? I finally broke my T10 4 speed on a juice launch and the only trans I have laying around is a overdrive unit that needs a rebuild.I am looking to buy all the parts from Raptor Performance Transmissions...but need to know if I am out of my skull for trying to rebuild it myself.I have built every other piece of the car myself (motor, suspension, etc) except for a transmission. Then when I can save up later on down the road I will finally buy a Tremec TKO or T56.Any hints..problems I may run into..anything at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Yea i have the same question, can you rebuild a tranny at home, what tools are needed? and do they sell rebuild kits or how does it works?
I know this may sound stupid, but my tranny is on its way out and i need to do something.
Dave
Has anyone heard of this company or have this tranny, is it worth the money ? http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperf700r4.htm

Never heard of that Rartor company they seem to have a fancy ad. Most of you tried and true companies like B&M, JET, Hughes, etc sell the 700R4 for $1600-$1900. B7M sells a rebuild kit called transkit (I think) for 700R4 for about $350.00 but comes with no instructions. I have never rebuilt an auto but they seem very intimidating, lots of small parts, but their are guys here that have. Most transmission shops will rebuilt it for about $1100-$1500.
I'm building a 200-4r and I'm at home. I guess the answer is yes,
it can be done. But it takes a lot of special tools and if you don't make your own, it will cost a pile of cash to buy them.

polishdevil-here is your tranny tool pic!
Here you go!
If you need a closer pic, just describe the tool
and I will try to get it posted. The white thing on the left of the blue clutch press is my portable paper towel rack, and the yellow
thing is my low/reverse piston installer. Yes, it is an old drinking
cup!

700r4 rebuild
Guys, I am a 20 year old hot rodder with no formal automotive training. I didn't even have auto shop in high school. I have rebuilt the 700r4 transmission. I have done it several times. It is alot less complicated than the 2004r, and there aren't as many tools needed. BUY THE HAYNES MANUAL! It is awesome and I would not have been able to do it otherwise. It is very important to keep things VERY ORGANIZED! DO not force anything, it goes together smoothly if it is correct. If something is stuck, take it apart and look at it from far away and see what the deal is before you break it! Use vaseline to lubrcate seals. (Ha, it works, I'm telling you!) Drill a 1.5'' hole in a junk but sturdy table, or the work bench, and just stack everything out of the case as it comes, starting with the front pump. The only tools that are absolutely necessary are the seal installers, the seal protectors for the overdrive unit, low reverse piston spring compressor, and front pump puller. You don't really need a press if you don't have one, i just use 2 large "C" clamps and a large washer to protect the part I am compressing. To get the solid seals on the later style turbine shaft on the alluminum drum that holds the 3 and 4 forward clucth packs, take the cap off a break parts cleaner can. Cut the top off so you have a flat peice of plastic. Wrap it around the turbine shaft and cut it down so it goes around the shaft and meets end to end. After soaking the solid seals in transmission fluid, place the solid seal over the plastic like a ring would go over a finger, and slowly slide it downt the turbine shaft. Starting with the bottom most seal, place the seal into its spot, now wrap the plastic around the seal, and with a small hose clamp, slowly tighten the seal into place, being careful to see that it goes into place. This sizes it because it will stretch down the turbine shaft. With minimal investment, and the willingness to learn, you can save thousands and have a sick transmission! Watch out for clutch pack backspacing though. Post any questions and good luck, don't be afraid, it can be done!

Thanks for the info guys. Whats in those red boxes? how would i remove just the tranny? My dad and i swapped my 305 for a 350, pulled both engines with the tranny attached and dropped it in with the tranny attached. We don't have a lift to work with. My dad's great with body work, paint, mechanical stuff, but he's never rebuilt a tranny and he says i should just go and have a shop do it. He says it be smarter than investing money in tools and then it not workin right. What should i do?
Haynes Manual #?
zz86roc28- Are you using the Haynes Techbook 10360? That's the one I am using for the 200-4r I am rebuilding. I like the pictures, but I tore mine down and inspected the parts and ordered new consumables for everything except the pump. The techbook seems to assume that every part is good and you can just put it together without any mods. I am going through each assembly as I come to it (in no particular order) and taking notes for any parts, etc., that I may have overlooked upon teardown. I am about to fit the assemblies into the case so I can check endplay. If I need any shims to get within specs I will order them when I order the pump parts. After I set endplay I will put in the band and the clutches which are not in drums.
Father knows best!
polishdevil- those red boxes are bushing driver sets. About $450?
for the set on the left from Snap-On and about $120? for the small set from Mac Tools. I borrowed them from a friend
It isn't
really cheap to rebuild your own tranny even if you have the tools.
If you don't get it right the first time you could be throwing away a lot of money in parts and your labor. I have abut $200 or so in my 200-4r, and I don't have a shift kit or converter yet

When my transmission went I found a cheap one on the classifieds here ($750 shipped) ...it was a recent rebuild with liek 12 k miles and a shift kit and goodies. Me and my friend put it in....its not hard. theres like 5 things to connect
