street/strip tranny

i was going to order the street/strip 700R4 from Probuilt this summer. Anyone done this or heard any good/bad rumors? It come complete with the Trans-Go shift kit, .500 main boost valve, corvette servo, and 8 clutch packs. For only $1400 it's not too bad considering a rebuild would be about $1200. Both still have labor costs though. Anyone have any other recommendations? Thanks guys.

o yeah, and they use 88-92 trannys, aren't those better? I know they made small improvements around 88, but their tranny may already come with those anyway. They ask that if you want a different year's tranny to put it in. Would I have to put in 86 r could i use the 88-92?

I have their street/strip model and it's a much better tranny than my old TCI. Do a search for pro built and i don't think you will find one bad thing said about them. I drive my car everyday to work, drive 2 1/2 hours to the track, race it, etc....It still shifts nice and firm since i've had it from day one. My old TCI after about 3 months, the 2-3 shift would "flare up" while racing. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

They do use the later model trannies for their rebuilds AFAIK, so to put one in your 86 you'd need to get a torque converter for the later model 30 spline 700R4 (yours should be 27spline). No big deal though...that would be the perfect time to change torque converters anyway.

ok cool. Thanks. Did you install yours, or did you pay for labor. If so, how much was the labor? Do you think the new tranny would be worth the extra money than the rebuild? I would also have to pay for the shiftkit extra. Thanks iroc.

Definitely worth it over a rebuild. Probuilt has a great reputation, and that's exactly what I'm getting once my transmission goes kaput. I'd get the probuilt and a new torque converter like already suggested and you'll have a pretty cool transmission.

I installed it myself, it took me an afternoon to do it. I'm not exactly sure how much labor is to install one...maybe someone here might know. It's not hard though, it helps to have a friend help you install it though (I did mine by myself ) Unless you can find someone local in your area that can build a 700R4 properly, probuilt's stuff is worth getting. As for the shift kit, you don't need to buy it, probuilt incorporates the trans-go shift kits into their trannies.

I have a street/strip version built by Dana in my car with 2400 ACT stall. I love it. He puts all the goodies in... transgo, vette servo & valves, he even blocked my OD downshift too so I can run 100% throttle in OD. It shifts great, I use to have a 90 700-r4 which I had a B&M shift kit put in.... it was very harsh 1/2 and firm 2/3 but other than that it was crap... still flared all the time... I really got tired of it quick. As for labor I had a shop install mine, I shopped around everyone wanted 200 bucks for complete yanking out old one and putting new stall and trannie in, then another 65 bucks for the cooler hookup and electric temp gauge put in the line cause I had AC on mine and I couldn't do it myself.

Local shop wanted 3k+ for stock type rebuild with "special valve body" guessing from a vette.... when I went up to him with list of Pro Builts parts that go in S/S version he just stared blankly back at me he had no idea what half of it was.... He told me there was no way a 700-r4 could take 400-500 hp... Pro Built gives you a warranty up to 550 HP!!
