Rear End Questions.. Please help... How Do I do this??

Ive got a stock rear end in my car, and I have the cash, I just dont know what to do to get 3.73 posi in my car... its the stock rear end out of my 82 Z, 2.78 Open rear.. I want to take that rear end to 3.73 posi, what can I do? I cannot change axle tubings, the axle that is there has to stay, because it is welded to my lift bars.... so What products would I need to convert my current rear end into a 3.73 posi rear? let me know what to buy, and from where please.. thank you

you need to get a new posi carrier and gears, richmond or motov will have the gears, you can go with a stock posi or eaton and auburn both make excellent posi's also this is not somthing you can do yourself, need to take it to a pro.

I don't have the part numbers right now, but here is what I installed:
powertrax locker(the cheaper louder version--that isn't loud anyway) Powertrax no-slip is totally quiet. For a 7.5 inch 10 bolt 26 spline axles.

3.73 richmond gears for a 7.5 inch 10 bolt 2 series carrier.

Full install kit plus axle bearings

That was 5+ years ago and it's never been apart since.

You could do it yourself, but you'll need all the tools; and by the time you're done buying the tools, you could've paid someone to do it for ya.

3.73's will require a "3-series" carrier... and the carrier is the posi unit. If you get axleshafts out of a 90-92 f-body, they'll be the stronger 28 spline axleshafts, so you'd order a posi for a '92 f-body with 3.73's (3-series).

3.73's don't have to be 3 series. It's just as easy to get 3.73's for a 2 series carrier. The old 26 spline axles will be just fine--the weak point is the ring and pinion. Using your current axles and carrier with new gears and a powertrax would be simpler and be plenty strong. Or, get a limited slip(posi) carrier and new gears, using your stock axles. I've installed plenty of the powertrax units it stock carriers, some with and some without new gears. Almost always(all the ones I've done) the shims don't need to be changed since the carrier and housing are the same. As you can see, it's difficult to just get you part numbers, since it depends on what You want to do.

So, the powertrax no-slip is a good choice for a non drag raced car, more like a road race car?

Will it handle a lot of power? (I dont think I will never put drag slicks)

How is it under power In a curve?

Thanks

(Also Could I use in my 92 RS an SLP take of, is this better for street use or a max of road race) Currently its an open diff. with 2.75 rear (Im not shure its right this number but I remember its the worse-longest)

Car: '91 Camaro RS
Engine: F1R Procharged 383
Transmission: Tremec 600
Axle/Gears: moser 12 bolt, 4.11's 33 spline axl
my car makes plenty of power and it has a powertrax locker with 3.73's....l launched the car at 6000rpm on slicks....the nose came up and the axle snapped right off at the splines....inside the damn locker.

so i took the carrier out, yanked the crosspin and hammered the piece of axle out with a chisel......

lo and behold, the locker was totalyl undamaged...it didnt even have any scratches in it. i put it back together and its still working fine.

so yes, the locker is great for drag racing....excellent in fact its a little rough around the edges sometimes at low speed but not really. for road racing your much better with a posi

So a posi, do you know wich one would be the better, and of course Im on a budget so no 1000$+ units, maximun 400$.

I will do that unless I find a 4th gen with rear discs and posi (Must be from 8 cilinder one? to have posi and rear discs).

But I dont have to much hope about that couse we dont see here much of those runing less in a salvageyard.

get an SLP take out for 100 and get 28 spline axles. ALWAYS use the biggest axles you can afford. It's just one less weak link to worry about. This is the best deal going. Summitt offers the Ratech kit and a Solid pinion spacer for the 7.5/7.625 rears. USE THIS SPACER. Once you get that done, have a competent welder run a bead around your axle tubes where they meet the housing. Don't have to have full penetration, just a good bead. Every little bit helps.
