Need rebuild?

Guys,

I'm going to start rebuilding manual transmissions as a sideline to my day job.

I've built MANY gearboxes for roadracing cars that have to stand up to serious horsepower. These weren't T5s, but I have the experience. I built Transmissions for SCCA TransAm Series cars.

I'm just getting started, so email me and we can talk about a rebuild.

[edit: Oh yeah, I haven't broken a T5 yet]

Thanks,
Clem

when i did mine, it was pretty easy. The most important thing i did to make it simple was to lay the parts in order on a long table as i took them off the shafts . I bought a bearing and syncho kit as well as a replacement 3rd gear and countershaft. The most difficult part, if i remember correctly, was setting the preload. Its all in the manual. I think the only special took i needed was a dial indicator for the preload

You can't drive a manual trans.

anyone that claims a t5 is a good tranny is highly ignorant and uneducated....if they last its just luck and/or granny driving.

Consider me insulted. Consider you "ignorant and uneducated" on the subject of being able to make a manual tranny live.

there are alot of threads from the past that explain in detail the inherent weaknesses of the t5, if you do a search you'll find them.
What's your point?

Thank you drive through

Clem

I rebuilt mine for the hell of it. Truth to be told, I sold the previous one in perfect operating condition (1984 T/A box) and put in an 88 TBI 305 box.

My attempts to blow the guts of my gear box all over the track have been unsuccesfull. I will continue my efforts and tell you when it finally gives in. Every one told me "it wont last a week" and that was 50+ passes at the track ago. I never take it easy and if i had the money to buy a pair of slicks i would launch it at 6000 to see light under the tires with a stock T5.

My transmission came from the factory in 85 mated to a 2.8 liter V6. 127,000 miles later i droped in a 355 dynoed at 425 hp. Now the tranny has 135,000 miles on it and never misses a gear.

For you who call that a bad transmision, shame on you.

my original T5 had a whiny 5th gear from the factory. GM replaced it at 6,000 miles, and it has been fine ever since. and I auto-x it and road couse it regulary, and it holds up fine.

It has 60,000 miles on it, and I'll get another 60,000 out of it no problem.

I second that. Power doesn't break tranny's, people do.

Most likely the 1-2 synchro is the problem. I'm going to have to rebuild mine soon here. My 1-2 and 3-4 synchros are about shot. I have to match rpms for it to go into gear smoothly. When I do rebuild it though, I'm going with the G-force kit. Does anybody know if that kit comes with synchros?

My car was parked for 4 years because of the tranny - that and no one wanted to fix it. Has around 120,000 on it. Only prob I seen with it was some kinda flat needle-thrust washer was wasted. Everything else looked great...replaced it and been going ever since.

I had a problem with mine banging out of second too. I adjusted the clutch and that seemed to help.

But now there's something screwed up with my speedo. And if I drive the lower cable with a drill, the speedo works fine. I think the clip on the plastic worm gear inside the tranny fell off.

Oh, and I think my throwout bearing is shot possibly. Hear a grinding noise (only sometimes) when I push in the clutch.

And it leaks too.

I'm looking into an aftermarket tranny right now, or possibly just buying a G-Force T-5 tranny. Not sure yet.......

add another broken t5 to the list, my first gear finally broke totally at the end of last year, i now have a th350 in the car and it is sooo much better not quite as much fun but much more reliable.... anyone read about these gforce t5's everyone has been talking about ??? can you really make these trannys hold that much power.. i thought the whole problem was the case flexing?

They're suposed to be able to hold 600 hp & 500 tq with drag radials and an upgraded clutch in a 3300 lb car. I think the case is probably the issue when you reach power levels higher than that. Until then it's probably the gears and mainshaft. I'm not a tranny expert or anything, but that would be my guess.

Either the synchro or the slider is shot. Could be the engagement teeth on first gear also.

Never broke mine. Had it behind a stock 350 for 3 years till I spun a bearing built that into a 383 had it behind a 383 for 4 years and I was not nice to it! Still was holding up has 160,000 miles on it and I have had the car for 10 years now......Soo still holding up! Shifting great too! WOW Eh?

Broke the 3-4 fork in it about 5 years ago from power shifting it put one in from a S-10 still running great!

I disintegated 3rd gear in both trannys by popping the clutch when I was shifting, the first one while upshifting and the second by downshifting.

Maybe I'm just pushing them too hard or buying craptacular transmissions or something. I don't think I have too much motor; I run 10.0s in the eighth.

I think mine's about to let loose. I can't downshift to second at all unless I go to first then second and even then it whines and doesn't really want to go in. Besides it's been acting strange and making weird noises and vibrations lately.

Well mine finally let loose yesterday night. I haven't abused it, but I haven't exactly driven it easy. Now I'm debating if I should buy a WC T5 to put in it temporarily then do the G-Force upgrade on it this winter, or get one straight from G-Force, or get a Tremec TKO. I'm building up a 450hp 500tq. 406 and putting it in in about a month, but I'll be driving it easy for the rest of the summer to break it in properly. What do you guys think? Put a WC T5 in now and hope that it doesn't blow up behind my 400 until I upgrade this winter, or get a Tremec and not worry about it? I'm kind of on a budget so going with the tremec will delay the motor. What do you guys think? Will the WC T5 last if I go easy on it?

Gotta be 1/8th, a T5 for sure wouldn't last running 9's in stock form.

you gotta learn how to drive it seems like to me, I mean, you wouldnt race a clapped out 305, so why would you not freshen the tranny and not drive it stupid? I mean, mine is behind a 500+ hp engine, and all I have ever done is burn up a clutch, you gotta understand that nothing is indestructible and you gotta drive accordingly.I still cut a 1.78 leaving at idle.... reving the crap out of it and dumping the clutch is never the fastest.

you are such an idiot! its not cool when you burn your clutch, its not cool when you blow the tires off your car, unless you are sixteen of course. I guess when you cant go fast, all you can do is burn rubber!
