Haven't broke mine, but the synchros are going out so it doesn't like to go into 1st and 2nd easily. Course it helps being behind a LG4. We'll see how long it holds up behind the 377 I'm gonna build...

That's about what I was thinking... I'm gonna have to get a T-56 when I drop that motor in. Aybody have a spare T-56 they want to give to a poor college student?

Mine has survived behind a very stout 355 for a few years now. The trans. was pulled from an 87 T/A and then I put it in my car. When I did the swap, the tranny had 341,100 miles on it. It now has many more, and seems to be doing fine. I have taken it down the quarter mile 77 times now, and the car is driven hard each time it goes out.

Keeping my fingers crossed !

I ripped it up 3 or 4 times with the original L69, and I lost count at about 8 with a 400. Then I discovered the strangest thing: it was actually possible to lift my foot off the gas in between gears!!! The thought had never even occurred to me. Since that moment of enlightenment, I haven't shredded any more.

broke two powershifting within months of one another in my 88 formula. i got a 91 trans am now wth a 700r4 and it gets just as much abuse as my 5 speed did and it remains trouble free for almost a year now. but i would gladly trade the auto for the manual any day of the week(lots more fun)

I had a 357 tpi and I only wrecked mine once, I tore it apart installed a new third gear syncro and clips and have not had a problem, (I was really shifting too quick and blew the springs out)I use an auto zone clutch and nittos so the clutch slips when I get to tough on it, it kinda keeps things from breaking .well except all the diffs I go through. those 10 bolts are junk! the 400 in it now may be differant though

I really want to know how you went through 5 trannies in 8 months. Were you fixing the old one or just putting junkyard ones in without even pulling the cover off??

Anyway, there's a guy that comes to my shop with an '85 or '86 Z28 with a pretty well built supercharged 350. He's still running the stock T5. It holds up because he doesn't abuse it. He refuses to launch it hard and it doesn't break.

I havent blown mine up, but my '91 only has 59,000 miles on it and until 5,000 miles ago it was owned by an 80 year old woman. Now that is in the hands of a 17 year old car crazed maniac it should hold up fine. chuckle.

If your driving is as bad as your english, i'm not surprised. Once in 7 years, i did a proper ( complete ) rebuild and its good to this day.

the first tranny was the orignal and after I drove about 7000 miles on it my counter gear and input shaft broke. (teeth were gone) it was about $500 for everytrhing to rebuild it
so i went to bloomington,ca to get

the second tranny for a DEAL at $475 with a one year warranty.
that damn tranny broke down three times and finally after quite a bit of hell i got my money back to pay for

the third tranny which is the current tranny which has just recently broke down. for a grand total of three trannys and five break downs.

ive got pictures somewhere ill try and post them for ya to gawk at.

last time i checked this web site was for automotive topics. save your opinion for the english department and let us know when you have something important to say to the mechanics garage.

ps. check out teletubies.com you'd have a blast.

"ps. check out teletubies.com you'd have a blast."

I couldn't get to that URL, are you sure you spelled it correctly??

Alright, just kidding. I didn't meen to insult you, but some people put absolutely no effort into their posts. The english department never liked me either. Its harder to understand questions and give answers when they are poorly constructed, besides it makes us look really bad when we sound illiterate. There are many people who look down on our sport and the people who participate in it.

i blew up 2 in 2 different cars behind stock motors.....

anyone that claims a t5 is a good tranny is highly ignorant and uneducated....if they last its just luck and/or granny driving.

there are alot of threads from the past that explain in detail the inherent weaknesses of the t5, if you do a search you'll find them.

the vast majority has only broken one t5, because people usually learn their lesson the first time lol:lala:

I replaced mine with a TKO, before it blew. I figure at least i can sell it now. When i did have it behind the 383 i swear i could feel it wrap up under acceleration. Like a torsion bar. The TKO feels the same under light throttle or full throttle, doesn't seem to care how hard you use it.

My T-5 hasn't gone out yet and it's got almost 160K on it, but it's in serious need of a rebuild. My 1-2 synchro is worn and sometimes it won't go into reverse unless I double-clutch it. Since I'm about to yank it so I can replace my slipping clutch I figured I might as well do a rebuild while I was at it...

mine hasnt broke once yet, i dunno if it was rebuilt before i bought the car or not, with the new 350 i have had in it for about 4months it has gone to the track every other week and has 30something passes on it...the bushings are worn and it feels like you in neutral when in gear but other than that no problems, got a wc t5 sitting in my garage waiting for this one to break...

what kind of clutches are you guys using? ive got a 406 small block chevy with a wc t5 and i dont know what clutch to use. I bought a ram racing pressure plate with a cenerforce clutch disk and when i had it in the car it would not disengage, it was actualy bending my bellhousing where the slave cylinder mounts up. So i removed it and put in a stock 305 clutch which works perfect until i get on it or drop the clutch help me out here guys

I also am using the CF DF clutch right now and love it. Although, I've never had a new clutch that wasn't satisfactory; I've had B-W, Ram, CF, McLeod, Hayes, and others at different times in various cars and got good results out of all of them. Some were better in some ways than others and usually if they were better one way they were worse in another, but they have all been good.

The CF DF is the smoothest operating clutch I've ever had, by far. It's the easiest to drive in stop & go traffic up a steep hill for example. It hooks up great too though, it will chirp 4th gear, so it gives the best of both worlds.

i got 170000 miles of my BW t-5, about 30000 of which was behind 330 horse 370 ftlb 355. It lasted an additional two weeks behind the 400+ hp 355 with me beating the sh*t out of it harder than i ever have in my life. with the older motor i refused to shift hard, but once i got the one i have now built i couldn't resist. My foot went to floor and stayed there for the duration of the romping...

Thats the only time it's ever broke on me, and i'm not giving it an opportunity to do it again. The t56 is being picked up Saturday

Eric

Have any of you guys had this problem: when you are at a dead stop and start out in first gear it slams outta gear and will nearly rip your arm off. However if i hold the gear shifter foward with a lot of pressure it will stay in. And if i am already rolling and put it in first gear it will not pop out, and all other gears work perfectcly?

Roughly 120K miles, many 1/4 passes, and not the first breakage.

Nope, have you?

Seriously though, I've had it happen in a 4 speed manual in a 71 Chevy, 'cept it did it in 3rd gear. Synchros or something. I don't profess to know.

hell yeah, its even worse when you are dead center in the intersection, and everyone knows something messed up when they see the car lurch... oh well. the synchros were easy except for, I think, 4th gear, we had to get the gear pressed off the shaft then back on to replace the synchro, real pain in the ***. I ended up going about it the hard way. I bought another used T5 for 200, but when I got it home and pulled both of them apart, some of the bearings were bad in the new one, and one of my gears was torn up and the front shift fork was broked, so we basically swapped internals. it would have only taken a couple of hours if we wouldnt have had to press the gears off, but everything has worked out great so far.

I just took the shaft and gave it a few wack to the ground but, used a 2x4 for a protector, it sound crude but, doesn't hurt it unless you go nuts and the gears come on and off.
