noisy mosier 9" rearend

I finally got to try out my 9" mosier rear end last week end.

it looks good and solid...

But man, it sounds like a freight train.... it's loud.
I have a used set of 3.55 gears and mini spool in it.

How much gear oil am I suppose to put in it?
What all could be causing the noise?
sounds like I may have some metal connection back there touching I'll have to check it out this weekend.

well...

A good friend put them in, he supposively one of the best around here.

we used a used set of gears out of an old pick up...
He said that they would make some noise.
He also said he didn't replace the pinion bearings and they may be making the noise.

but that thing sounds like a freight train when I give it alittle gas...
I wondering now if some metal maybe rubbing metal, because I had to do some bending on the mount for the panhard bar.

well if I knew it was going to be this bad I'd just stayed on dragradials kept buying junk yard rearends for $50.

The radio cann't even block the noise out.

Moser rear ends have had a reputation for being noisy. Seems that they don't always get the gears set up right and use Richmond gears. A poorly installed Richmond gear can be noisy as heck. If you are not using Richmond gears or some kind of a locker there is no excuse for the rear end to make noise unless something is torn up. So I would not just live with it and accept that a problem is ok because it has a big name on it. In defense of Moser I would say it sounds like you took a nice housing and axle set and shoved a junkyard special third member in it. Sometimes that works out, but its certainly the first place to start looking for a problem. My recommendation would be to do it right this time and buy a new US Gear 3.50 gear set, all new bearings, and have the pumpkin set up again. While this is being done scrub down or hot tank the pumpkin housing and inspect it for cracks. I would be far from surprised to find a crack near the pinion bearing. If this doesn't solve your problem get on the horn with Moser and see what they can do to verify your housing and axles are straight and right.

I agree with Dr. Pepper, if this noise is as bad as you say (radio can't even drown it out), I would find out what the problem is. There is no way it should be that loud regardless of if the gears are new or old if they are setup properly. Are you sure it is something in the rear end making the noise? Nothing is grounding out anywhere?

noise

I'm going to check the pinion bearing and check for some metal rubbing back there. I heard a noisy rearend before but this is the pits.

yea i just replaced my buddies gears in his camaro...... he says it's doing a little moaning sometimes not all the time.... but i rebuilt the rear this week and we put it back in today.... that is normal for it to do taht for a little while during break in while the gears mesh and everything breaks in correct?

hmmm........

well I pulled the pinion out to see what the bearing looked like...

It all felt pretty tight so I didn't mess with it, but I believe the gears are the problem. They've got some wear. I guess I'll run em till they brake. I want a posi unit anyway.
