it can be any ratio as long as its 10 bolt and it comes with the correct carrier???
what am I looking at in the way of pricing???
around a 3.42 or 3.73 posi???
thanks a bundle...

The cheapest and best posi is the SLP take-off, their part # 64501T IIRC.... $99 www.slponline.com
There are lots of sources for gears; try these guys http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com...=28&cat=GM+7.5 I use them alot, they have good stuff, good prices, GM gears if you want them.
You'll need a complete gear install kit, and I also strongly recommend a crush sleeve eliminator.

If you install BOTH these parts, then you will have a 3.73 posi.

Crush sleeves partially set the pinion depths..crush sleeve eliminators "eliminate" these. They are solid and don't crush => getting rid of most if not all of the pinion play in the housing=> stronger.
Spend a little time searching the key words you are looking to learn about. There is TON of info on this site to learn from.

thank you so much....
that is what i needed to know....
if i found for instance a rear end out of an RS 5spd w/ 3.42 gears but is an open rear.... can I put that slp unit in that and make it posi????
do I have to have the install kit then???? i'm on quite a budget....
is this a project that I should try to undertake??? i've heard people talking about backlash and things like that, and I don't know what they are talking about.....
whatcha think?

Yes, if the RS rear in question has 28-spline axles. 90-up ones will have those. 88-back will not (26 instead). 89, you'd have to count the splines to know for sure.
No, you don't "have to" do anything; but if you want it to last more than 100 miles, it's highly recommended. Or, look at it this way: If you're "on a budget", do you have the money to throw away on trashing a carrier, a set of gears, and maybe a pair of axles, and then buy the kit and do it a second time? If you don't have the money to do it right, then where are you going to find the money to do it over again, and possibly have to spend more fixing additional stuff that got tore up in addition to what you should have done right in the first place?

Honestly, if you're on a budget, it would be easier and sooo much cheaper to just buy a 3.42 or 3.73 posi rear from a '89-up disc car instead of putting all the parts together separately. You should be able to get one for around $300. Then it would just be a rear end swap....MUCH simpler.

go to a bone yard and look... but most places hate to pull all that crap apart and then have useless parts... IMO just find a rear from a 5 speed car and throw it in there... there is a guy here is Nashville that had one last week for like $150... but he sold it... you can find an entire rear for the same if not cheaper than getting the posi and gears new
