How do shift kits work?

How do shift kits work? ie- What makes them able to manually shift through the gears? You don't have to push a button to shift like stock autos correct?

I don't know what button you are talking about, but shift kits don't allow you to manually shift an auto trans. Any automatic trans can be shifted up and down manually straight from the factory. A shift kit like you would by from B&M increases pressure and allows for a firmer shift. You can also change other things like servos which also helps the shifting quickness and firmness. Now if you select to put a manual valve body in place of your existing valve body, that converts the auto function to pure manual. You must switch your gears as if you were in a 4 speed car without a clutch. I didn't go into much depth because there are people on this board much wiser than I when it comes to auto trans. I built my own so that it shifts very firm and quick, but selected to leave the auto valve body on for good streetablity, but it also performs well at the track when I go through the gears manually. Hope this helps a little.
