Rear End Spline Numbers

So what difference exactly does the number of splines on you gears make? I was looking into a 12 bolt rear end from Moser and they had a choic of 30 and 33 spline. Can someone Explain to me the difference other than 3 more splines?

the more splines makes the axles a little thicker... for example i had 26 spline axles before i did my recent gear and posi swap from stock posi/ 2.73s to the SLP zexel pull out unit/ 3.42s. the zexel uses 28 spline axles so when i got the new ones i compared the two... the 28s are bigger with just 2 more splines more so that i could see it by eye... way i could really tell was by puting the 26s in the posi and seeing that all they did was spin in place... so the 30 to the 33 is quite a jump... the bigger the axle/ more splines the thicker it is and thus stronger!!:lala:

Less back lash with more splines in the same Dia. with more metal to metal contact=tighter fit. Example: 26 larger splines vs 30/33 with smaller splines on the same Dia.

So more splines would be indefiantly better?

Yes, the higher the spline count (within limits of the Dia.) the stronger the two mating parts. Axle shafts into mating side gears.

Remenber the Dia controls the spline count.

OK...... Let's say I want to change the 28 spline from one carrier to the other.

I now have 28. Can I pull the 28 spline axles and spider gears and put them into a carrier that originally used 26 spline axles? Is the actual OD of the axles the same between the two?

The reason I ask is I would LOVE to change rear gears. I want 3.42's. I now have a PowerTrax locker that I just bought. It's in the rear end now with the 28 spline axles.

I found a peg leg rear with 3.42 gears but the axles are 26 spline. I want to move the PowerTrax from one carrier to the other, along with the axles.

Don't worry about the complications involved. I've got that handled. All I need to know is (without having to yank two diff rear ends apart) are the axle shafts the same OD?

I don't want to buy a 26 spline rear end, and find out I can't change my $400 Powertrax over to it.

Thanx

It sounds possible about what you want to do. Now the other hang up maybe the carriers you want swap into must be the same.
The 3:42 is a 3 series and the other one you did not say what the gears & carrier were. As for the Dia over the splines for the 26 & 28 you will have to measure it yourself or someone can confirm they are the same and will fit.
