My 1987 Trans AM GTA has a tranmission problem. It goes through 1st and 2nd okay, but won't go into 3rd and the engine just revs. I checked the fluid, it was a little low and I filled it, but the tranny still won't go into 3rd. The car is driven sporadically and has the orginal transmission and 161K miles.

Any help would be appreciated

"it just revs" means that it is slipping. If the clutch is slipping, then its shot. Very common for the 3-4 clutch pack to fail, causing this concern. Time to yank it for repair.

 

The weakest point in the 700R4 is the 3-4 clutch pack, and yours is gone, time for a rebuild.
