HELP!!! my trans. is stuck in D

Last night i started my car and shifted into Drive... when i went to shift into Reverse, the shifter shifted into R, but the actual transmision stayed in drive. When i move the shifter into Reverse the reverse lights come on, but the car stays in Drive. My push button on the shifter is loose, and the shifter moves around freely. I checked that the cable was attached, and it is. Plese tell me how to fix this because my car is stuck outside my house with blocks under the wheels. any help is graeatly apreciated.

Sounds like the cable is broken.

Have somebody sit in the car and move the shifter while you watch the trans linkage; that will tell you if it's the shifter, the cable, or the trans.

I had a similar problem with my car 2 days ago. It wouldn't go into park...just stayed in reverse and the whole shift linkage was kind of sloppy. Got under the car and the nut had come loose that attaches the shifter cable to the trannsmission. Tightened it up and know its like new again!!! Give that a try and see what happens

make sure when u do this that the car is either up with the rear wheels off the ground or the ebrake is on and works well. i was doing something simular to this once on my friends 82 T\A. and he had his car parked with the front two weels on the driveway and the rear two wheels on the street so i could get uder and the base of the driveway. so the car was on a pretty good slope. and no ebrake or anything blocking the rear wheels. i messed with the linkage at the tranny and it went into neutral and started rolling back while i was under it. i somehow was able to roll from under the car just inches before the tire would of ran me over.

Hey I have the same problem but I cannot figure this out! I found neutral on the tranny and put the shifter in neutral, I would attempt to connect the cable to the shifting lever on the tranny but the cable seems like its not long enough! Its one gear off....so I was to connect the cable to the tranny in Park, the cable is only long enough to get to the tranny shifting lever's reverse position....even though the shifter was in Park......wtf is going on??? I matched the two together one time by connecting the cable to the tranny one gear off and then hammering the tranny lever to the proper gear....then tightening the bolt......it would still come off and i'm still stuck in Drive!

Damn I have a feeling I might have to see a shop about this.

Do I have the shifting patter wrong perhaps? I cannot find a diagram anywhere so I had to use my best guess....can you guys tell me if this is correct?

Your diagram looks right, but check to see if the bcable support bracket is located properly on the transmission and not loose or otherwise mis-adjusted.
