700r4 questions?
I am getting ready to install a carbed 383 in place of my tbi 305, and I read in one place that by doing so I will not be able to shift into over drive. If anyone has information on this will you please let me know if it is true or not. If it is true how do I fix this? Also I am planning on getting a 3000 stall converter, if by doing so will that take care of the problem?
A lot of people don't understand the 700R4 and this is how it becomes "the bastard tranny". Some people still think that it needs a computer to shift through the gears because it has a 4-wire connector on the side
(don't take this as a flame, its not)
Its not overdrive you will lose, its the Torque Converter Clutch lockup. It is the ONLY function of the transmission that is controlled by the ECM. However, without a computer, there are still ways to get around this.
There are kits that you can install a 4th gear switch that will immediatly lock up the TCC once in fourth gear, and there are valve kits that will also lock up the TCC based on speed. You can also install a manual switch, that way you will be in control of when it locks up.
As far as the 3,000 stall converter, that won't solve the fact that it still needs to lock up. In fact, being such a higher stall, makes having the lockup very important, especially for highway use. It MUST be a lockup converter though. If you get a non-lockup converter, then it will never lockup.
