rear end part #
is there some decoder or someone who can tell me what this number means. I have the car up on jackstands and i was just looking at some stuff. the rear end is a 10-bolt and has this number on it.. GM N 22522676. anyone know what that tells me?

Thats the wrong number. You will need to get the # off the bottom of the passenger rear axle tube.You will probably have to take a wire brush to remove all the dirt and grease to see it. then post the # an we can help you.

Its on the axle you really have to use some elbow grease and a wire brush to remove all the rust and grease to locate it, but believe me it there.

Take the cover off and look. All this business about "codes" is as much trouble as just doing that one simple thing, and the "codes" can be wrong, but putting your eyeball on the parts themselves is 100% accurate.
Have you changed the fluid lately? Then you need to take the cover off anyway. Make a point of looking at you gears and carrier while you're doing the long-overdue maintenance.

The code is on the outside of the case. The gears and carrier are inside. People change that stuff that's on the inside all the time, without changing the codes on the outside. All the codes will tell you, assuming that you can find and read the right ones and that you can decode them, is what came in that housing; not what's in it now.
That's why it's a whole lot more sensible to just take off the cover and look. It removes all doubt and uncertainty, and accomplishes the overdue regular maintenance, all in one easy step. Especially if you're planning on buying parts, the codes are untrustworthy. People get burned that way all the time.

The only thing I am trying to figure out, is what the axle really is. I heard somewhere that this rear might be a 8.5" I know its a POSI, I know it has 2.73 gears, I know it has disc brakes. I know that my friend has changed the gears in it. Really, I dont give a crap what the #'s say about the gears. All I want to know, is the stock carrier size.

If it fits these cars, it's a 7½" or 7-5/8", whatever you want to call that size, and not 8½". Since someone else has that same housing casting number in their car it's a pretty safe bet that's what it is. However, there are 2 axle splines that it could have, either 26 or 28; and the side gears inside the carrier must of course have the corresponding splines. That is notoriously difficult to predict from outside the housing; although if it's a 88-back rear end, and you know that for sure, it most likely has 26-spline parts, and if it's 90-up, probably 28-spline. And of course, if it has 2.73s, then it definitely has a 2-series carrier.
