t5 help!!!!

i can't do a search at home because my computer is going haywire... so this'll be quick... when i get to work i will do a search but i also am going to ask now incase i can't find anything tomorow.... i inadvertantly removed the bolt in my t5 that is at the top on the drivers size i guess it connects something to the stick. it is just above the rpm sensor at least i think thats the rpm??? any way when i pulled it out it made a popping noise and the stuff on the inside fell down in there it is a long bolt with a slot on the end... anyway the base hobby shop closed early so i could not finish i will work on it tommorow night and friday... so i know the tranny must come out and i must take off the plate on top but what do i do next?? does anyone have a schematic of the t5 my haynes book is garbage i wish i could sue those idiots!!!
i have had other problems with haynes books for other cars as well!!! any way any help will be much apreciated!!! thanks and happy new year!!!

If it was a torx bolt, then you have removed the pivot bolt for the reverse shift lever. You also probably destroyed the c-clip that holds the lever onto the bolt also. The sensor you mentioned is the reverse light switch.

You have no choice now but to pull the trans and fix this. Do not start the car, or even try to move it without removing the drive shaft. You might jam the reverse lever or c-clip between gears and break something. You shouldn't have to completely disassemble the trans to fix this, but do try to get that c-clip out of the case. It will probably be stuck to the magnet in the bottom of the case by the time you get the trans out and onto the floor.

Maybe you got lucky and nothing is jammed between the gears. If you were able to push it out, then you should probably be ok to push it back in. I was just trying to be cautious in telling you not to move it.

Here is a pick of the reverse lever installed in the case of an old T5 I have here. It shows the c-clip installed holding the reverse lever on.

By the way, you can't just pull the top plate off the trans by itself. You have to pull the tail housing off first in order to get the top cover off.

Since it sounds like you have never been into a T5 before, I'd say a full day. That includes pulling the trans, fixing it, making the inevitable 1 or 2 runs to the parts store, then putting it all back togehter. If you have pulled a trans out of your car before, it will go faster. I've replaced my clutch several times and can do the whole job in about 5-6 hours from start to finish taking my time at it.

For the clip I'd go to a tranny shop and take a print out of the pic I posted with you and try to get the clip there. I'm guessing that the clip wouldn't be a normal item that a dealer would carry. Other than what happend to you, the clip really never breaks.

Don't forget to get trans fluid and silicone sealer to seal the trans back up after you get it fixed.

Good luck.

Wow, that was fast getting the trans out.

Ok, first you have to pull the shifter. You have probably already done this, but wanted to mention this anyway. After you pull the shifter, pull out the little plastic bushing that the shifer ball goes into and don't loose it.

Next just in front of the hole that the bushing came out of you will see a small roll pin. Drive that pin all the way out, downward. Then after removing the bolts holding the tail housing on, slide everything back and off. Be sure not to loose the roll pin, spring and check ball. You have to re-use these when putting the trans back together. Also take note of any shims, thrust washers, or bearings on the fifth gear on the right bottom side of the case. They have to go back in exactly like they came out. While you have the trans out, I would highly recomend installing a new rear seal in the tail housing. It's cheap insurance against a leaking drive shaft yoke.

Now you can remove the top of the trans.

Good luck.

Geez, wonder if I should change my name to "obwan camaro", or "obwan T5"?
