700r4 only 1st and reverse

I have an 86 Trans Am. I was driving it the other day and it shift into second gear (or so I thought) very hard. Then all i had was first gear. The tranny had been shifting harshly for about a week. Anyone know what damage I have done?

When was the last time you changed the fluid? It's possible you can fix it (although unlikely) by pulling the pan and valvebody, and cleaning the valvebody thouroughly.

Worst case scenario, you can pull it and rebuild it better like I did.

Were the shift points normal, just unusually hard, or were they later than usual? Was it just the 1-2 that was hard or all of them? Have you tried adjusting the TV Cable?

I should have told you. The tv cable caused the problem. The shifts were at way higher rpm and i neglected to check it out. I obviously did serious damage to the tranny.

"This is by no means an endorsement to fill my tranny full of cat pee". And what are you doing messing around on the boards, get out that and work boy.
