Stripped Transmission Bolts

Has anyone ever stripped the 4 bolts that hold the transmission to the chasis? The holes in which the bolts go are stripped, so the bolts just keep turning and turning. I heard I can fix them with Heli Coils but I don't know the size and I'm afraid fo causing permanent damage if I don't do them right. I drive the car hard so I need to fix this good.

Actually, we had that happen on a friends car. I think that if you inspect it closer you will find that it is probably not stripped. There are nuts spot welded on the inside of the subframe that they go through and they have probably broke loose from being over tightened or something. There are a couple of access holes in the subframe where you can get a wrench inside and hold them still but it is a pain in the ***.

This actually happens fairly frequently. Drill and tap them out to the next biggest size. That's what I did. Good luck.

Are you talking about the ones that go up into the subframe from through the crossmember?

Axle/Gears: 3.27 9 bolt posi with PBR discs
Yep I had that exact same thing happen when I put my T-56 in. I ended up just re-tapping them, I actually tapped them with an american size tap not metric hehe It worked out great and I've had no problems yet!

What do you mean retap them? Sorry if I sound ignorant but it's because I am, lol. Retap what? Explain very concise and thourough please

Well a tap is a tool used to cut threads in a hole. They are fairly cheap and can be bought at most auto parts stores. All you do is get one that is one size bigger than the threads currently are (I'm sure someone on here can give you exact size, I can't remember for sure at the moment) and then you basically just screw the tap into the existing hole. It cuts new threads and you can screw a new (larger) bolt into the new threads and it'll hold great! Hope that cleared things up a little, if anyone else can add to it and clarify it more please do!

So, on your cars it was actuall just part of the frame that was tapped or did you still have the nuts tac welded on the back and they striped? I am pretty sure that it was just nuts inside the subframe on my friends car. We used a wrench to hold them and tightened it up.

No, I believe they're nuts tacked into the frame, but the problem was not that they'd broken loose (in my case), but that the threads were stripped, so I retapped them and all is well now

you can run a 7/16 coarse thread tap through the stripped holes, you don't even need to drill them, in this case. If you would like to drill them then get a 7/16 course thread tap and buy the drill size stamped on the tap. I think its a 3/8" drill. In my case it worked fine without drilling. Don't forget the 7/16 bolts and washers too.

Thanks guys, I was ready to hold those thingies with a wrench but retapping them sounds much easier.
