Problems with shifter with T56
Problems with shifter with T56
I've got a T56 from Spohn installed in my 91 camaro but now I can't put my lower console back in because the shifter is in a differant position. Has anyone else had this problem and what was your solution, I also tried a B&M ripper shifter but that didn't help.

I never tried putting the stock center console back in, so I dont know if it would have been a problem. Instead I put in a center console from a 97 TA. IMO it looks much nicer, not so boxy. Plus I have cup holders.
I had to fabricate up a panel for the window switches in the ashtray, and I havent quite made the radio pod fit perfectly yet. I dont have a pic of it, but I know there's some pictures in the interior tech section.

I have my stock console in the car, but I also have a ghetto rigged shifter, maybe thats why it fits, I don't know.
thanks for the replies, i might have to try a fourth gen console and see if it works like it did for you. The thing that pisses me off is that on spohns site it clearly says that the shifter location is not changed.

I've got a T56 from Spohn
Hey brandon, what's up? Taking good care of my hood i hope.
This is what I have.
Tremec T-56 Six Speed Transmission
Tremec's GM aftermarket replacement T-56 six speed is designed to replace the T-5 five speed in the 1982-1992 F-Body. This transmission can be used for many other applications with small modifications. Gear-ratio spread: 2.97:1, 1.94:1, 1.35:1, 1.00:1, 0.84:1, 0.62:1 forward, and 3.28:1 reverse
Tremec's GM aftermarket replacement T-56 assembly uses a 26-spline input shaft that mates with the existing GM clutch assembly. Also includes a special adapter plate that bolts the transmission to the stock T-5 bellhousing. The kit moves the T-56 transmission mount 1.9 inches rearward to mate with a Spohn Performance crossmember. This in turn requires correspondingly shortening the rear differential torque arm by 1.9 inches. An easy solution to this is to use the complete Spohn Performance transmission crossmember/adjustable torque arm kit! Retain the stock 27-spline slip-yoke, but shorten the driveshaft by 2 inches, or use a ready to install Spohn Performance Extreme-Duty Driveshaft!
Shifter location is the same as the T-5, so no floor pan or console modifications are necessary. The transmission is set up for a speedometer cable or a VSS connection, so no speedo calibration box is necessary!

I am running a t56 out of a 97 Z and I had no problems with my shifter with the stock console. I am using the Lou's Short Stick but that shouldnt matter. What is the exact problem with your shifter? where is it hitting.
Because of the adapter plate that comes with the spohn T56 the shifter housing is pushed further back and also towards the passenger side, it's affected the console by it being closer to the passenger side if I install the console I can only shift in 1st and 2nd without it hitting the right side of the console. What i'm planning on doing is make a angled piece of metal welded onto the shifter lever so it comes out at an angle closer to the center of the console.

Weird.... I have a 4th gen T56 with a Pro 5.0 and a 97 TA center console and it all fits perfectly (course I cut the whole for the shifter since it was an A4 car). My Pro5.0 is angled towards me (the driver seat) a little bit..... that might help you some but I doubt it would solve the problem (although I ove my Pro 5.0 and would highly recommend it
). I would suggest going with the 4th gen center console as it has a much larger area for the shifter to operate with it being closer to the floorpan (tranny tunnel) and having a bit larger opening for the upper boot and shifter to reside (at least it looks bigger to me...). Plus it looks nicer and you get all of that other good stuff like ViciousZ says
