What usually happens to a 10 bolt when it breaks??
I have a 10 bolt 3.42 posi rear from a 92 Camaro in my car right now. I figure it's only a matter of time before it breaks, because I have a lot of power and a lot of traction. I was just wondering what is it that USUALLY goes on these rearends? I'm hoping it's not an axle, becasue I don't want to end up in a guard rail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't broken any 10 bolt axles (with a small block anyway).
I have broken a lot of the pins that hold the spider gears in the case. Usually this causes one wheel to lock up (as you're driving down the road) .
Not as drastic as an axle, but it'll put ya into the curb pretty hard, still.
If you're making a bunch of power and using sticky tires (really hooking up) you ought to move up to a 12 bolt with c-clip elims or a 9 inch, if you can afford to do so.

Pieces fall out.
The ones I've broke: axles twisted off, a carrier broke in half arouind the "window" you reach in through to put in the small gears, and pinion bearings have gone bad, and one R&P got teeth stripped off of them, and once I had a spider gear break in half.
Haven't broke a housing yet. I think I've torn up every single other piece of one though.

i snapped an axle, at the track on a 6000rpm launch so i really cant complain....the 12 bolt is coming though hehe.
i have a powertrax locker, if i didnt the spider geras or part of the posi probably would have broken first. its pretty easy to break an oem ring gear too.
i saved the axle as my first racing-demolished driveline part.....im actually pretty proud of that little guy....he took all he could, but in the end he just gave up

About a 300 hp L69 and many hard street launches by popping the clutch at 2400 rpms. The guy who had the car before me had a 355 that was not in the car when I bought it, that may have shortened its life.

the rear end is the red-headed step child of drivetrain components and gets the ever-loving **** kicked out of it on a regular basis....then one day, it just goes kaboom.

you can get lucky and scrounge a 9 bolt out of a later 3rd gen. for about 2 grand you can have a ready to bolt in 12 bolt or 9 inch that will be indestructible.

like i said before,
taking into account the money, the quality and everything else like easy of install,
the ready to bolt in 12 bolt or 9" are the best you can get.....from moser or currie.
of course some *** clown will keep bringing up, "well ya know people have problems with those and they break them"
well ya, and sometimes when you buy a part at the store its defective.....it happens. Its a racing part, and a good one at that. It will take substantially more abuse than any OEM type rear will. although if you can find one, the 9 bolt is a good axle.
for the people that were taking a crap on moser 12 bolts and 9" rears earlier, what do you suggest is better? id like to hear it because i know the ones from currie are about the same. and i know your not using a 14 bolt or an 11 inch. the only other options are a dana 44 or a dana 60 and those are comparable to a 9"in strength (a little better) and a 12 bolt in efficiency. but are alot more money.
for street duty and limited strip use, your not going to break a 12 bolt with a moderately built engine unless your an idiot.
