TH-350 ???'s

is there any way for a novice to visually inspect a TH-350, I just got it and would like to see if it worth putting in the car. I am going to be using it in a strip only car, I don't want to put it in and then find that it is trashed but I don't want to pay for a rebuild if it doesn't need it.

also is there any way to ID. a torque converter, I would like to know what stall it is.
