B&M Megashifter vs. Hurst Dual Gate II
Hey, guys, can you tell me which shifter is better? Whichever one I get needs to be the "console" style. Do both of these sifters come with a new plastic plate? (like the original plate that has the gear indicator in it and the four screws holding it down.) I really need a new plate because my screws are stripped and it is all cracked, so if these shifters come with a new one, then that's even better! I know both shifter are totally different. Can you guys just give me your opinions on which has better value, ease of operation, installation, finish, performance, and reliability but not on looks? I do know the B&M has a reverse lockout and the hurst doesn't- can someone please inform me on what a reverse lockout is, I mean I know it is that little lever, but let me know what it does. Also, the B&M comes with two switches- the back up light indicator and neutral safety switch, however the hurst only includes one of those two switches. A back up like is pretty easy for me to understand (it puts the back-up lights on automatically when put in reverse, right?) but I'm not sure what a neutral safety switch does.??? Well that's it guys, I really really apreciate you answering my questions here. Thanks! -89IRO
The neautral safety is so you cant start the car when its in gear, only in neautral, I have the megashifter, I love it, but it takes some time and effort to put in like 5 hours....new tranny linkage is included and must be installed, and you have to go to radio shack to buy a part for the electrical end of the shifter. Read the instructions before you rip the console apart, go to radio shack and buy the part, and they dont give you a new shifter plate, just a little one that covers the existing one. your stock plate needs to be cut out.......Go with the b&m its a great looking price and will give you a bang for your buck

I have a Dual gate i really like it alot of guy around here have a megashiftersand they like them.I think ive have had a lot of compliments on it or people asking me what is it......
So the neutral safety switch will just let me start the car not only in park but also in neutral? Why I would want to start the car in neutral in beyond my mind..?? Oh and enlighten me on the back up light indicator? Also, what about the reverse lockout??? Why does the B&M have this but the Hurst doesn't? And what is its function? And so if I want a new shift plate (like explained in my first post), I will have to buy a new one ($60) and then I will have to cut it up?? Yikes!!! Is this with both the B&M and Hurst? -89IRO

I have started my cars in neutral many times. Say if I am reversing or whatever and the car stalls, instead of stopping, putting it in park. I can just put it into N and restart the car while its still rolling.
THe Dual gate comes with a new plate (well the lower half of it), but you would have to cut the top part of your old one off for the ashtray.
I bought the Hurt but returned it after a couple installation problems which were my fault.
THe reverse lockout prevents you from putting the car in reverse accidentaly I guess. Don't know for sure.
In my car the neutal safty switch and the reverse indicator are on a clip that goes onto the shifter. I am not sure how you get it to work on either one. I didn't get that far.
I haven't bought a new one because they really dont do anything the stock shifter won't.

Alright guys, I am kind of leaning toward the Megashifter because it is cheaper, I've heard good things about it, it comes with more stuff than the hurst, and just think it looks downright cool. But here is my question- guys please be honest- is this an upgrade worth the money/time? If I don't get a new shifter, I will be getting a new shifter grip (for the original one) and a new plastic shift plate (probably totalling around $100.) And does this shifter make it more fun to drive? Now I know I can manually shift with this (just like the original one), but if I want to can I leave it in 3rd or overdrive all the time if I don't feel like shifting- or do I always have to manually shift it? Alright thanks, more opinions on megashifter? Oh yeah, and can I get more info on what I'll need to do with the plastic plate (cut it??). -89IRO
An as far as the reverse lockout (megashifter), do you have to first pull the lever then put in reverse? You have to pull the lever first so you don't put it in reverse while moving, right? -89IRO

This is how you'll have to cut your shifter plate. They give you a piece that covers what your have to cut. I just took my time on the whle installation.

I just looked that the megashifter and it looks pretty good. Plus it makes use of the light already under the shifter so you can see what gear you are in. Thats one thing I didn't like about the hurst one. If I were to buy one, I'd preobly go with the B&M as well.
So you're telling me I am going to have to buy a new $60 shift plate (because I really need a new one bad) and then cut the **** out of it? Man does that suck. What did you use to cut it out? Oh and can anyone else please answer my other questions? Thanks! -89IRO
