Opinions on Bowtie Overdrives 700R4's?

We are looking at getting their Level 3 transmission for my bro-in-law's 91'Z. For the price, I feel it can't be beat for what they offer compared to the others I've looked at, including Pro-Built, PTC, Rosslers, Hughes, and Art Carr.

Here's a link to it:Bowtie Overdrives Level 700R4

Lemme hear your opinions!

For some reason, they don't believe in shift kits. Craig has one of their's and without a transgo shift kit, he hated it. It shifted slushy without one, and I don't know if it is an option or not.

Hey BJ, is Craigs a Level 3 also? His car is where I got the idea for James' car. That's what was wrong with James' car that day at the track, it would never shift to 3rd gear. On the 2-3 shift, it would just hold at about 4500 rpms, slipping, until you let off the gas, and then it would shift. Now it's slipping on the 1-2, 2-3, 3-OD shift, and will not kick down. So he's just gonna go ahead and spend the money on a good tranny, and get rid of the one that his ex-stepdad built.

Seems to me that you should compare it to www.pro-built.net and see the changes that Dana makes...

At least his transmissions hold up...

What exactly do you mean by that comment?

We're about to plop down quite the hunk of change on what we feel is a good transmission, and unless someone can change our minds, we're going with the Bowtie Overdrives.

Dude...do a search for Pro-Built and read.

There are a lot of guys on Thirdgen.org running his 700R4 and one of the oldest ones is from 97. There are guys running healthy HP (400-500) with no problems...A good combo is the ACT convertor and Pro-built trans.

I couldn't find anyone running the Bowtie Overdrives tranny with either a lot of miles on it or high HP. That is why I called Dana at Pro-Built to talk with him.

I don't have any affililation, nor do I get sponsorship, discounts, free anything, blah blah...but I did do my research before I bought from Dana. Why? Because it is a huge chunk o cash...

HTH,

Thanks alot man, that's exactly what I was looking for.

We already have a Yank ST2800 that is less than a year old that will be going in the tranny we get, so it should be jst fine.

If you are wondering if I will give a warranty with the Yank ST2800 torque converter?, I will. His TC's are a good quality from what I hear from others using them.

I can't remember what level he has. I will have to ask him. If you get one from them, tell them to put a shift kit in it, cause they won't otherwise.

The guys in CA aren't the only ones who build trannies. I've used one from Car-Pro when I lived in Detroit, and I beat the **** out of it with no problems. You could also try the Raptor brand.

Nothing wrong with Pro-built also. The tranny I have in there now was bought in 1997 and it was $995, so I don't even think it was the heavy duty one, though I don't know what he was putting in them back then, but I still beat the crap out of this one, and the fluid smells and looks brand new.

You could also try to build your own. I tried to help Brett re-build his 700 in his garage with the Hughes video and re-build kit, but we screwed something up, and it bit the dust a month later. If you have the time and the patience, you could try that, but you have to take some parts to a machine shop to get the bearings pressed on and off.

That's just the thing, we don't have the time to do it. That's why we're having to order one, get it shipped here, and when it arrives, swap trannies.

Pro-Built.....that's great news to hear, and has us leaning even more your way now. Thanks!

all the people here have had very good experinces with pro-built trannies. he's quick to work out, if any, problems you might encounter. you know tranny guys, they are always saying you did something to screw it up an try to get out it. pro-built doesn't BS you on a problem, but instead helps correct it.
