Picking out a tranny...
What kind of tranny do you guys think I should run behind my 383. I'm not a granny, so just slapping in a plain 700 is out of the question. The car is an auto, but I'd almost be willing to swap in a manual 6-speed. Any good input is welcome.
And I don't care if they can be MADE to handle lots of power, I'm not putting in a 700r4. I know they can be made to handle a lot, but I don't feel like spending that much for one, and IMO, they're crap.

Will someone please make a suggestion on what would be a good tranny. And DON'T tell me a 700R4.

It depends on what you do with the car. If you make frequent trips to the dragstrip, a built TH-350 or TH-400 would be ideal due to their strength and ability to give consistent times. The 400 is stronger, but it's also heavier so if weight is an issue, and you're not running ludicrous amounts of power, go 350.
If it's a daily driver and you mostly drive on the street, maybe open it up on back roads and such, I'd say T-56. You can run evil gears in the back like 4.56s and still not worry about fuel economy too much.
Those are the only three transmissions I would even consider putting behind a 383.

Well, you don't want to spend much money to get a tranny that can hold power. Might be tough to do. I think that the TH400 as already mentioned is probably your best bet for value vs. strength.
I would also add a few more to Uncle Skeletors list of tranny's that I would put behind a 383 (or better): Tremec 3550 or TKO.
Good luck,

I never mentioned money being an issue in this one. The car is not going to be a daily driver. It prolly will hit the strip a few times. And like I said, I'm no granny behind the wheel. I guess I'll just go with a T-56. I have more fun driving manaual trannies anyways. Now I just need to start rounding up parts for an auto to manual swap.

yeah I second what schultzy said.
tremec tko all the way, because they have an ultra deep first so you can get away with a rear gear ratio, that will take advantage of a 383's awesome low end torque while not sacraficing the first gear pull. like a 3.27 9-bolt.

I forgot about the TKO and 3550. Yeah, those would be good choices as well. My bad, good call Schultzy.
