Shifts but doesn't catch
Shifts but doesn't catch
I've got a '82 Firebird V6 that I've been parting out. I got the car cheap cause there was a problem with the transmission. I don't have the shifter anymore, but if its a problem that may easily be solved I'll get another one and keep the car.
The car would start and shift into all gears, but it wouldn't catch in any of them. There was no difference in the sound of the engine or anything else, it just would not catch. I tried all gears and nothing changed with any of them. I revved the engine and it still would not move.
I'm a novice so I'm not certain about dropping the tranny or any other type of major work. I was hoping that there may be a few things I could easily check to determine if the problem is major or possibly minor. If its something I could have repaired for a couple hundred bucks I'll keep it. If its going to be $500 to a $1,000 I'll just continue to part it out then junk it.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like your clutch linkage is damaged or isn't adjusted right, or your clutch is burnt out. Adjusting linkage is free if you know how, repairing linkage usually involves a trip to the salvage yard, and stock replacement clutches are around $100 or so at Autozone.
You might try adjusting the tv cable or checking the line pressure. You could also try to take the oil pan off to see if the linkage is actually moving inside the transmission and check for bits of anything that isn't supposed to be there in the bottom of the pan. That might help you be able to tell if it's really screwed or not.
