2.73 to 3.42

I went from 2.73 to 3.42 gear in my 91 Camaro RS. Now the Speedo is like 15-20 off. How do I go about figuring what I need to fix it? I will have the tranny out this weekend for a stall and shift kit so I might as well fix that too. Thanks.

I'm not sure what speedo gears you need, but how much of a difference did the 3.42's make?

Did the same to my 86 Camaro. Massive difference in bottom end power. Well worth it. I'd guess about 4/10 in the quarter.

Since mine is so much older than your 91, the whole set up is different. I needed a sleeve and driven gear, but maybe your's is the electronically programmable type of speedo???

Nope. It's electronic but not totally. You have the Two gears the driven and drive gears. the only thing different then that is that there no cable it turns in a electronic signal from the housing out. hope that helps. i'll tell you how mine goes. I have a 1992 camaro. and i went from a 2.73 to a 3.73.

Shouldn't be hard to find - go to a dealer because the RS's also had the 3.42's, so just ask the parts guy.

I changed the driven gear when I put the new trans in my car, but I haven't changed the drive gear(was told I didn't need too. I have 2.73's, putting in the 3.70's next wednesday. The change in indicated speed wasn't as severe as I thought it would be, maybe because of the new trans and TC or because I didn't change the drive gear?

you need to change the drive gear, or you will never get it right

Yup...search is good.

However, go to www.700r4.com and play around with their gear calculator. I even found it for ya:

Have fun!
