speedo drive gear retaining clip from an 83 700r4 to a 92 700r4 ?
does anyone know if i can use retaining clip from 83 700r4 output shaft speedo drive gear and use that all on a 92 700r4 output shaft in order to convert it away from VSS and to cable driven setup ???
thge 83 tranny has large style speedo body just like what i assume the 92 one has

You can use the 83 speedo gear, speedo gear sleeve, and retaining clip / bolt in the 92 tailhousing, yes.

totally different type of gear though, judging from pics i have seen on the 700r4 page anyways
thanks
thanks
The VSS type speedo has a pressed on steal gear/reluctor on the output shaft.
The mechanical driven speedo gear is plastic and is retained to the shaft with a metal clip.
The late output shaft with the steel straight cut gear (pressed on) should still have hole provisions for the metal clip/plasic gear. The tail houseings should also interchange.

Okay you're missing the point here.
Unless a 1992 700-R4 is different from a 1991 700-R4, this should clarify.
The 1991 700-R4 I have is out of a 5.7L red Z28. It's matching numbers to the car. It had a normal plastic speedometer drive gear on the output shaft. The VSS is driven off that, and has a plastic gear on itself inside the tailhousing.
ALL I HAD TO DO TO CONVERT IT WAS USE A SPEEDO SLEEVE AND DRIVEN GEAR. The 1991 A4 does NOT have a metal reluctor ring. If 1992 does, I'm sorry.
The metal reluctor ring style didn't start until 4th gen years, 1993 maybe, 1994 for sure.
Hope that makes sense.
