HEEELP!!!!!! Tranny install problems

Ok, here is the situation:

I bought a transmission from a 1984 camaro. It is a 27 spline 700R4, which is what it is replacing in my 1985 Z28.

The BIGGEST problem is the torque converter. When we pulled the old torque converter/tranny out, there was barely a gap between the TC and trans. When we put on the "new" TC and tranny, there is a big gap, you can stick your hand in between the two. The tranny is pushed all the way up against the bellhousing, so it cannot go forward at all. Do we need to put in some washers or spacers of some kind with longer bolts so that we can put the TC where it needs to be? It catches on the input shaft, but barely.

The second problem is the shifter cable. The shifter cable just does not reach. Do you think there might be a difference between an 85 shifter cable and an 84 shifter cable?

I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm so frustrated right now! I think that I only have about one days worth of work left in me to get this thing runnin. If it doesn't work then, I probably am going to have no choice but to part it out because I can't sell the car in this shape.

I am going to have access to an 86 IROC to part out, but I don't know when. I guess if the converter is the problem, then I can grab that off of it. I just don't know how long I can leave the car where it is before it is impounded.

Thanks for your help,
Jesse

Update

Well,

I feel kind of silly, the tranny just needed some more fluid to work on its own. We stopped putting fluid in yesterday because it started leaking, so we only had 2 quarts in at the time. So we put in 9 more quarts (my dad wanted to go to 15, but I stopped him at 11 b/c that's a little too much).

The car moved on its own, but I still had to shift the transmission from underneath the car to get it out of the bay because the shift cable is not hooked up quite right.....err, at all right now.

So we fixed the main problem, but we made another one. The tranny crossmember bolt threads are gone, so tomorrow we have to drill out the hole and tap it for the next size bolt. We came back to the bay after backing the car out to find two crossmember bolts on the ground....that's not good.

I still don't know what I'm going to do about the stinkin shifter cable though, I think it might have broken at the top mount, I need to go and look at a new one after I finish this update.

Thanks guys,
Jesse

Ok, I just got back from the parts store, the shifter cable is broken on my car. I just picked up the new one. Hopefully I'll be on the road tomorrow.

Thanks guys,
Jesse

when you put the converter on the shaft..slide it on..turn the converter and it will slide on again,further...2 steps.......

I guess I didn't make it that clear, but we did that. The part that I didn't like was that we had to pull the converter towards the engine to get it to bolt to the flywheel. I talked to my buddy and he said that was normal.

The problem with it was the lack of fluid.

Now all I have to do is bolt up the crossmember with new bolts and R&R the shifter cable (I hope).

Thanks,
Jesse

Final update

This is the final update, because IT'S ALIVE!!

It's only been since August when I last drove my camaro.

Anyways, instead of drilling and tapping the crossmemeber bolts, I had to weld the crossmember on because the tap got broken in one of the holes.

All it really needed was a new shifter cable and some fluid.'

Later,
Jesse
