quick corvette servo help
quick corvette servo help
I am installiing the servo in my 700-R. I have the snap ring off the cover, and a lot of fluid has dripped out, but I cannot seem to get the cover off. It wiggles as if is was screwed onto a central shaft of something. I have turned, twisted, pried, and prayed, but it isnt budging. What gives?

It is a PITA but it does come off. There is an o-ring in there. That is why it is so hard to get it off. I had to got a big pair of vise-grips and twist it back anf forth and outward until I could get to the o-ring and rip it out. A new o-ring should have come with the kit.
yeah, I can see the green O-ring behind the cover. I guess I just have to keep working at it.
On a related note, I am installing new boost valves too. I have the pan off and the fluid out, along with the old filter. I see (towards the front of the trans, by the solenoid) about 4 valves. At least I think they are valves. Anyway, which two do I pull? Any tips would be appreciated.
I dont know what I would do without you guys, thanks again.

ok, update:
I have the servo cover and first piece out, but cant manage to get the second piece. (I have the e-clip and spring out). As far as the boost valve, I found it, but had no luck getting it out. I have to find some better tools and go back at it tomorrow morning. I lowered the trans as much as it would go, and then it just sat there, not hitting the dist. cap. ?? And the thing doesnt want to move side to side at all. Looks like I am just going to have to muscle it.

you need snap ring pliers to the get the clip out first for the boost valve then it should drop out, then put the pieces back in with the new boost valve and put the snap ring back in.its under alittle bit of pressure so you have to push up and snap the clip in.
Alright, I got the snap ring out using some home-made tools. The valvescame out along with a spring and a shaft type thing. My question is this: which end of the shaft goes up? I didnt see the way it fell out. It has a spring lip about 2/3 of the way down it. Does the long end (judging by the spring clip) or short end go up? This is turning out to be a bigger project than I thought. Thanks again guys.

Thanks a ton! That really helps. I'll keep you posted as to progress, and improvements once everything is in.

EDIT: I now have everything squared away with the boost valve. And I have the entire servo assembly out of the trans. I have the snap ring off, so the spring pressed plate and servo are free. However, I cannot get the servo off the pin. It moves up and down the pin, but does not come off. I think a ridge has worn at the end of the pin so the pin end no longer fits through the hole. Should I file this down, or am I missing something? The directions I read say that once the snap ring is removed, the servo will just come right off the pin.

Alright, eveything is in and bolted up.
Unless its a good sign to have red spot under the car and smoke coming from the trans, I think I have a problem.
The trans doesnt want to transfer power or shift. In overdrive, under easy acceleration, it goes all the way to about 3500, when it used to shift MUCH earlier. Also, when coming out of turns, I press the gas, but not much happens.
Could I still be low on fluid? I added as much as I took out.

Yeah, so...I just went out and moved the car. Normally i feel it shift into reverse, but not this time. I let off the brake, and the car barely crept backwards. Same thing happened in drive.
Oh yeah, the puddle got bigger.

Find out where its leaking first,is it leaking from the servo you just put back in?Fix the leak first check the fluid to make sure its full, and find out whats wrong before you start to go driving it again, youll burn it up if not.
I went out this morning, and checked the fluid. It was a little low, so I added some. Then I checked underneath and it seems to be leaking from the servo on the passenger side. Drips are coming straight down from there and there are drips n the passenger side frame rail. The smoke mentioned before is nothing (old fluid burning off the cat). Also, I drove it around and it doesnt shift out of first, and now I have no reverse gear.
Somebody please help, as this car is my daily driver.

well if i was you id pull the servo again and make sure everything is back in the way it should and see if the o ring is seated around the servo. Also you made sure to put the boost valve back in ,in the right order. It worked right before you pulled everything apart right? if it did then theres something not right when put back together id say.Id double check everything, just hopefully oring for servo is ok when you take it back apart.
Yes,everything worked fine when I took it apart. I put everything back together right, or so I thought. One question I did have though, how difficult was it to put the new boost valve in? I really had to give it a good push. If that was sticking, could it possibly be causing the problems that I am having?

Yes it has some pressure going back in your pushing up on that spring, but im not sure if thats your problem,if probuilt transmissions sees this he might give a suggestion.I hope you figure it out.
Ok, here's the story.
The new servo was leaking, that is for sure. I took the old O-ring out to replace it, thinking that it was faulty. Not the case. I couldnt get the cover back in place, so I called Pro-Built. Dana told me to try it a different way, which I did with no luck. But I did find out that the servo pin and housing are in sideways. They are slanted in the bore, and stuck that way. It takes a *** amount (read: tons) of pressure to move the pin back and forth, and the servo housing itself doesnt move at all. I tried tapping the crooked housing to move it, and I tried other methods as well. Nothing is working.
From the looks of it I am going to have to tow it to a trans shop. I am going to have a friend of a friend look at it, hes a GM trans tech with 30+ years experience. If he cant do something on the side, I have to take it in. (not to dealer, because I cant afford it.)
I hate my car. This was supposed to be an easy thing for me to do. My trans worked before, why cant I just leave well enough alone?
Sorry for venting.

Ok, I took a day and a half to think this over. After realizing that most trans shops are going to want to screw me over, I am going out now to see if I can get that damn servo out.
The plan is to lower the trans to get a little more working room, and hopefully I'll get it out without damaging my BRAND NEW SERVO.
Bottom line is: I am an idiot.

It's done. I was able to lower the trans, and tap on the piston housing with a screwdriver and mallet, and it came free. I took everything out and cleaned it up a bit, and reassembled.
The car doesnt leak anymore, and shifts like it should. I havent had the chance to drive it hard and test the new servo/boost valve, but I will.
I just want to say thanks to Dana and nitrovette for EXCELLENT advice. Nitro had some great response times to my ?'s and I really appreciate it. Hopefully I can tell others who do this how NOT to screw it up.
Anyway, since I did drive the car when it was leaking (and probably low on fluid) I am going to flush it tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Dave

Is there any trick to getting the boost valve back in? I can get it to compress, but not enough to get the snap ring back in place. It is not binding as far as I can tell, it just will not go any further.

I'm going to give it another shot today. It's been raining all morning, so I had to wait awhile. If I don't get it I'll start another thread. I didn't want to start a new one until I was sure I couldn't get it.
Edit: Ok, I got the boost valve back in. I feel like a moron, I just had the spring in the wrong place. I had the old drop light tunnel vision last night and when I took a second look at the pics I had I saw the problem. Now I have to get the servo back in and this thing will be done.
Well, I got the thing put back together and it seems to be shifting fine. It was hard to tell the difference with the wet roads all it does is spin. We'll see what it can do tommorrow.
