What is going on with my car?! Could it be the tranny, TC, or driveshaft? :(

What is going on with my car?! Could it be the tranny, TC, or driveshaft? :(

Okay, here are some things in is doing...

1. When I am driving down the road, the car will 'jerk' for a split second whenever I press the gas OR release the gas.

2. If I am driving at like 1500 rpms or so, the car will pull to like 2500 rpm then start to pull harder (like it should have the entire time).

3. If I am in 'Drive' and let off the gas... the rpm's will fall to like 600-1000 then when I hit the gas, it 'catches' up and goes to like 2500 or so then starts to pull and eveything is fine. The transmission is not slipping.

4. SOMETIMES the 1st to 2nd shift is 100% perfect and other times, it is VERY rough and makes a 'thud' sound.

5. When I shift from Park to Drive, there is a 1-2 second delay before the shift and then it SLAMS into gear.

I have just put on a new tranny mount and adjusted my TV cable. Didn't help... I smell a weird smell whenever I shut the car off (although I have no idea if it is related). I am getting ready to change the tranny fluid/filter. Someone said it may be U-Joints? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

-Thanks

U joints could be one thing. Also could be the bushing in the tailshaft that the driveshaft rides on wearing out. Mine is!

Part of it sound like you're feeling the TCC kick in and out. My car feels really weak in 4th gear in town. If I give it more throttle, it will kick down into 3rd, go for a sec, then the tcc kicks back in. Sounds like that's another part of what you notice.

number 4 and 5 would lead me to believe that it is slipping, not IN
gear but between shifts. this is a notorious problem, the 700R4
only lasts about 100K miles. at about that point, the clutch
packs start to wear our, and if you floor it and ride it all the way
out to a shift, she'll slip really bad during the shift.

statement 1 leads me to believe that your TC clutch is just
(dis)engaging, it could be getting a little worn (depending on
your mileage) and the lockup is getting rougher.

statement 2 suggests a downshift, or if you let it run at 2500rpm
and the speed kind of levels out, the TC clutch might be engaging,
and then picking up speed.

statement 3; IIRC, the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) only locks
up in Overdrive, it's a clutch like plate in the actual converter
which binds the input and output shafts to produce a 1:1 ratio;
when you're in drive, it does not lock up. when you're in
overdrive, it will lock only when you are cruising, it will unlock
when you begin to accelerate, or deaccelerate (it's only meant for
improving gas mileage) Now the reason why it seems to not
repsond to a certian RPM, the Torque Convertor has a stall speed
this is the speed that it stops functioning and putting a regular
strain on the engine for power, this keeps you from going dead
at a stoplight in gear.

Your stall speed might be 2500, where in drive, is where it begins
to do it's magic and pull harder, of course it'll pull a little below
2500rpm's, but it's efficency is lower, and it doesn't put a large
load on the engine, like when you're accelerating.

That's preety much all I know, and don't believe me by heart,
I only know what I've been told, and what I've read. If some of
this stuff is incorrect, feel free to correct me, but don't bash me
for being misinformed.

BTW, I have a 700R4 which is past 100K miles, normally this
is just about how long they last; my TCC shakes the car
violently when it locks up, the only way I can get around it
is to stay out of 4th gear, or keep accelerating or deaccelerating,
course that's bad on gas mileage, but it's better than being
out of control with a violently shaking car.

It also slams into gear, when I shift from park/neutral to Overdrive/Drive; it takes about a moment to engage, then no matter
how hard I hold the breaks down, it literally jumps into gear and
lurches foward a little. This is a sign of a worn out
transmission.

I've been told they go out with a bang, and you're left with first
or second gear.

I was gonna say transmission mount is causing your jerking problems until you said you replaced it....

Hey, I just bought the tailshaft bushing and seal today. It was called the "Extension" seal or something like that. It was only $6.50 for the bushing and seal... does that sound like the right piece? I also bought U-Joints and a tranny filter kit. I am gonna chance all of it tomorrow. If the TCC is going bad, I will just replace it with a Vigilante

-Thanks
