I'm not sure about the grinding sound but the jumping definitely sounds like the transmission mount broke.

Shortly after I had my 700r4 rebuilt I accidentally did a neutral drop on the freeway (shifting from neutral to drive/overdrive while at high RPMs).

A little while later, my transmission got REALLY messed up. It wouldn't go faster than 35 mph in overdrive, and made a horrible groaning noise while downshifting.

The backpressure from the high RPMs snapped the forward clutch piston in half, at least that's what the shop said. Luckily it was under warranty, because it had to be RE-re-built!

Yup, you broke your transmission mount, like everybody who has one of these cars does sooner or later.

Get an Energy Suspension or Prothane one, don't bother with a stock replacement, it'll just break again like they always do.

Fix that first. You may find it fixes the noise too.

ur trans mount is located on the trans crossmember which is attached to the back of ur trans and connects to the frame, u do not have to remove the trans, just keep it supported and in place with some kind of jack and a wooden board or somethin to prevent denting your trans, the easiest way is if u have air tools just take the whole crossmember off, 5 bolts, put a new mount in, polyurethane is the best, and just bolt it back up....right guys?

Don't use the preload plate, you don't need it

Yup I'll also say transmission mount is what's causing the clunking. It's easy to replace, don't worry.

1.) Get your car SECURELY on jackstands.

2.) Get a decent floor-jack under the car and support the transmission at the pan with a block of wood between the pan and the jack (so that it doesn't have all the support force in one spot). Raise the jack enough so that the transmission just barely starts moving up, so that you know the support is at the jack and not on the crossmember.

3.) Remove the four bolts on the crossmember (the bar running sideways across the transmission supporting it), two on each side.

4.) Remove the center bolt on the crossmember. That rubbery-looking, weird-shaped thing is the transmission mount. It should all be one piece. If it's in two pieces, it's bad.

5.) Installation is reverse of the removal. ;-) Make sure you've got the crossmember on and torqued down well before you lower the floor jack.
