Is my transmission slipping?! :(

I am trying to find out what is going on with my transmission... It shifts fine if I am just driving. It will go 1-2-3-4 without any problems. However, whenever I let off the gas my RPMs will drop very rapidly! Then when I press the gas again, the RPMs will raise very rapidly to a certain point... then it fells like something will 'catch' and then the car will pull harder and the RPMs will raise slower. Example: I am in 2nd gear and going like 60 MPH and the tachometer is showing like 4500 RPM then I let off the gas, instead of slowly dropping like it should... it drops right down to like 1000 RPM or so INSTANTLY, like it was just shifted to another gear or neutral?! Anyone have any ideas?

-Thanks

Sounds like a sprag is broke. I think the foward one. Mine did the same thing. Trans lasted about a year after that, then broke a bunch of hard parts. You gotta pull the trans and rebuild it to replace the sprag, so you may as well drive it till it breaks, unless you have the $$ and are really bored.

Before doing anything extreme, check your transmission fluid (too little or too much fluid can cause slippage), and adjust your TV cable.

Hmm. My camaro does the same thing! But it has a 2500 stall in it so does that make any difference.

trying manually dwonshifting shifting it to a lower gear and see if engine braking occurs.

ie. going 25 and drop into first.

report back with results.

It is the input sprag and or overrun clutches are gone. What happens when you put it into manual "3" (drive) ?

sounds like rebuild time, on my 83 the tranny was actually slipping 2-3 and id be cruising at say 50mph, let off the gas, the rpm's drop and i could manually shift it into 1st and it would hold the same rpm's unless i hit the gas, come to think of it the tranny in the 84 did the same thing, but that one had BIG problems, when we pulled the pan, there were enough metal pieces to forge a piston.

Id say u have maybe 6 months atleast before you loose the tranny if thats the only thing it does

well like i said mine is doing the same thing but it has a 2500 stall. When i manually hsift it down to first and hit the gas and let off their is engine braking. Is this good or bad. It usually happens worse in od then any gear. COuld it jsut be the converter and is it normal?
