How do you know if you have a shift kit installed?

Just wondering how to tell since the guy I bought my Formula from didn't really own the car, he just bought it at an auction and sold it to me.

When I take off at about 10-20mph and at about 35mph when it does the 1-2 shift, the tires will chirp pretty hard and the car pulls really hard. Not sure if this is normal or not.

This is the first auto 3rd gen I have owned and I haven't really driven/riden hard in an auto 3rd gen.

Nope, thats not normal. You most likely have a shift kit. How are your part throttle shifts?

Well, tonight I held the throttle to the floor and at 105 or so it shifted to 4th.

What do you mean about part throttle shifts? To me, they feel quick and firm.

I love the feeling of the 1-2 shift though, it either chirps the tires or kicks the rear sideways.
Also, when I watch the speedo during the 1-2 shift, it will shift at 35mph and then jump almost instantly to 40mph.

Firm shifts at WOT are fine, what about part throttle shifts, what are they like?, especially the 1-2 shift?

I am not sure how to answer on the part throttle 1-2 shift.
On my friends 82 with the LT1 and 4L60E with the TransGo kit, his 1-2 shift at part throttle is really firm and hard since we used 2 washers in his install. Mine isn't as firm as his on part throttle but that could be due to the size and torque of the LT1 compared to my LB9.

Since the car will shift into 4th at WOT, does that mean there is a kit installed. I hear people complaining about the car shifting to 3rd at more than 50% when driving pretty fast..

Some 700R4's will do a WOT 3-4 shift. The "2" washers will make for a very firm 1-2 part throttle shifts, and so will drilling a large 2nd gear feed hole. In my units I use .096 2nd gear hole size and "no washers" along with the Corvette servo, this will give you a smooth 1-2 part throttle shift.

If this tranny dies and i decide to stay auto, I'll probably get one of your tranny's.

my GTA has the LB9/700R4 combo, stock, and I chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift pretty much every time, even with 110,000 miles on the tranny.

I was wondering about the same thing.....when I bought my 91 Z28....the kid said he replaced the transmission and it was $1500.00....but....I have no clue what he did to it. If I just drive normal around a corner....the tires spin...just a little....and it hits into 2 with a really noticable "nudge".....I've only had it it to the floor from a dead stop one time....and it hit 3rd gear...but..I let up...cause it looked like the edge of the road was getting closer and closer to me. If I floor it from 20 MPH....it hits really hard....and burns the tires. I wasn't sure if this was normal for a 5.7 or not. This is with all of the mods listed in my Sig. So....is this pretty normal or did someone beef up the tranny?

I was wondering if the governors in each trans are different according to the original rearend gears. I changed from 2.73 to 3.42 gears a while back, and my 1-2 shift is coffee spilling at part throttle, and it barks the tires and lurches the rearend sideways at full throttle. In fact, it even chirps the tires a lot of times at part throttle, especially when it's cold. I know for a fact that I don't have a shift kit in it since I've owned it since new and never put one in. The only other thing I could figure might cause it to shift so aggressively might the be the TV cable adjustment. Mind you, I don't mind the way it shifts at all. It's kinda fun! Just wondering why. A lot of people ask if I have a shift kit in it when they go for a ride with me. Opinions anyone???

As far as I know, most 700r4s have a harsh 1-2 shift from the factory. That's why the TransGo shift kit advertises that it fixes that "problem."

I think that almost every thirdgen with a 700r4 has a governor kit that sets the shift limit at 4500 rpm. Unless you hold it in gear manually.
