rear end whine on a 9bolt B&W

I have a high low whine that seems to be getting worst, it only happen under coast going down hill or coming off throttle. This seems to be a common problem with the BW is there a fix?

yes I did a search but did find a answer to my question

Most likely pinion bearing preload is too little.

What does it take to solve my problem, shims? also what special tools if any are needed, or do you have a idea on how long a shop time would be??

thanks for the input

Yes, special tools are needed. To properly set the pinion preload, the carrier must be removed. You can try just tightening the pinion nut, but you will never know how much preload is on the bearings. Too much and they'll burn out, too little and you have the same problem (which can lead to gear failure or worse).

The torque is setting by measuring the rotating torque of the pinion when seated in the bearings, not by the torque on the pinion nut. That's why the carrier has to be removed to properly set it up. When you tighten the pinion nut, put some loctite on it.

you can always try a fluid change first. When I bought my GTA there was a rear end whine and a leaky diff cover. Only a very small amount of fluid came out when I pulled the cover. I put new fluid in, and within a couple weeks my whine disappeared and has been gone since.

CW, indirectly it is vibration (loosely stated), directly, it's anything from not enough preload, to embedding, to thread relaxation, to thermal variations to...... One of (if not the best) methods to prevent fasteners from loosening is to use a chemical bond on the joint ie a Loctite or similar. One of the worst methods to use is a split lock washer.

$hit miles I hate to do this but

since I cant set bearing preload, what would be your BEST educated guess once the pinion nut is tight, 1/4 1/2 full turn more. I dont want to smoke the pinion bearing but I didnt like the alternative problem

Thanks for the education

May also check the teeth on the ring and pinion, I had the same symptoms, and i had a broken tooth on the pinion.
