what is needed to go from 2.77 to 3.73? obviously the gears, a carrier? what else. i have no clue, also what books are there that would help give me some insight into a gear swap, to do it PROPERLY!!

You need a carrier and a set of gears, and all the bearings and shims.
But first, you need a wheelbarrow full of $$$$. I doubt you can get just the parts alone to do that, for less than $750.

750 bucks for gears for a 9 bolt!?!?
what happened to like 400? thats a rip off.
do they bearings and shims usually come with the gear/carrier set?

$750 is for the carrier and gear set, a 3.73 ring gear wont fit on the 2.77 carrier, so you have to buy both. Just go to www.9bolt.com , all the prices are on there.

maybe someday soon youll get an order from me. just curious, why are 9 bolt parts so expensive? arent 10 bolt parts quite a bit cheaper?

9 bolts are expensive because they where a very limited run in NA, they where in the 86-89 birds and in the 87-89 or 90 not sure but only a few years, where as the 10 bolt everyone and there dog has one as a fake tree in there back yard.

How much stronger are the 9 bolts?were talking 7 5/8 verses 7 3/4.Im thinking the cost far out weighs the strength.I would go with a 10 bolt, plentifull and cheap. If im wrong please somebody explain it to me.
Look on ebay right now,a guy is selling a 9-Bolt Borg Warner posi carrier. They are the cone type, way better than the 10 bolt eaton carrier.I just picked up a complete rear disc, eibach springs and a whole lotta parts off an 89 GTA for $200 I even got an aluminum driveshaft!!
9 bolt parts are more expensive than 10 bolt coz they have to be imported to usa ......the housing was a limited run and GM stopped importing them for cost reasons HOWEVER they are still the performance( read stronger ) option on a camaro/firebird ...........would you take a 350 out and fit a 305 tbi motor ????????
like us aus guys importing camaro /trans am parts from usa we are affected by monetary exchange rates and the aus $ has now come back up .which is good for us guys in aus as things get cheaper BUT worse for you as it will make things more expensive
and btw you cannot get a NEW ring and pinion in aus for a 9 bolt for much less than the price you are hoping to pay njitiroc and then you have to pay freight /import duties to get them into usa .....
the reverse happens to us in aus
a ratio change on a 10 bolt costs us around $1800 !!!!!!!!!!!

I've got my bird in the shop right now getting 3.73's put in my 9 bolt since i shelled the 3.45's. It ain't cheap I'll be the first to tell ya. the gear fit in my carrier since it's originally 3.45, and I'm still spening $1059.16. Thats for labor, oil, a new diff cover(old one had a hole shot through it), Ring&Pinion, Shims, Axle seals&bearings. So with a carrier, look at spending even more.
